Title: Search limited to past 30 days?
Post by: michelle on May 05, 2004, 02:51:53 AM

I just tried to run a search and discovered that it would only offer a window of 30 days worth of posts as an option to search.  If it is going to be that narrowly confined, the search feature may as well be removed.

The functionality of the site seems to get worse with each successive period of downtime...

Not only can't search past 30 days, but the messages are no longer archived at all.  No way of what anyone said about a ball earlier than a few months back.  8 pages in the Dyno forum for instance.

Thanks!

Wonder if everything was purged at the 30 day mark? Doesn't sound logical .. but then having the SPELL CHECK out this long shows that there is PROBLEMS some place!

Just went and looked to see how far back messages are available and it only goes back to Jan 04.  We lost a lot of good data that used to be here.

Bruce,

If you need to save bandwidth or something, please let us know.  It's frustrating to see changes where we don't seem to need them while other problems exist.  Search is a great feature, but limiting it to 30 days makes it nearly worthless.

What Strider said.

And, Strider, thanks for providing the link to Ron's Tips.  There really should be a link to it on this site's webpage.

Yes.  Preferences will go back 120 days.  I could see posts from early Jan04.

But we are talking about using the site's Search feature.  When you try to do a search, it will only give you a drop-down menu choice up to 30 days.  Used to go back much further.

And didnt Preferences let you go back a year before?

Okay, my previous post was replying to a question that Brickguy221 asked.  Now it is gone.  I am not babbling to myself, honest.

What, what do you mean I am spending way too much time here?

Isn't that expecting a bit much?  Seriously, they are great tips and I got tired of opening a second browser window so I could find a tip to link for people.

LOL......M1, right after I made my post, I saw what everyone was talking about, so I hurried and erased my post thinking no one had time to see it and answer it. Looks like I was wrong there...lol

I don't recall, but I believe preferences did go back a year.

Sorry I pulled my post so fast. I didn't expect an answer that quick this time of night.

Don't hold your breath Jeff, else you might have to become "Jeff the bowling smurfette" (mainly because I don't know that Laracuente will relinquish the Smurf moniker ).

Yes, both the search and preferences allowed you to go back one year.  Actually, the search claimed to allow a search of ALL posts, but the archives had been purged to just the past year.  That by itself was frustrating because there was lots of good stuff lost from back in the beginning...one of the other sites I am on (and that is far more active than this site ever has been) is archived back to the beginning in September 1997 (a total of more than one million posts).

This stinks!  I've emailed too!

But I no longer can even find the actual email addresses of the owners?

Wonder if site was sold over weekend.

I loved to go reference some old posts in drilling.
At least they could have warned us this was coming! So we could print out articles we referred back to!

I have no darn idea there Scott!  This site has been going down hill as a true resource of knowledge for sometime now.  With some of the BS here we've lost some good members and now this!?!?

Without any replies back from the Admin people here, we have no way of knowing if our suggestions/complaints are even being read before they end up being purged from the site during the next maintenance upgrade.

Obviously there are no replies here from Herr Admin, have any of you that sent emails?  I know that there were not any subtle attempts made to correct the problem without us noticing because I just checked and search is still a 30-day limit.

The search feature should be extended, no questions, no doubts, just extended, and the messages should be archived somewhat for references and such.
