Why so few posts displayed all of a sudden?

The format of the first page has very recently changed and very few posts are now displayed.

Why?

I had the same issue earlier today but as you say it's back to normal now.

I noticed the same thing for about an 8 hr period late last night (Tues) and early this morning (Weds).
