Sanding...
« on: November 05, 2004, 01:40:46 AM »
After placing the ball in the spinner, do you sand from the top of the ball down to the cup or just from the middle of the ball back up to the top?

I understand that the initial placement is with the label up.  Is this correct?  Is the label the name of the ball or the manufacture emblem/name?

Cheers

Robert

This applies, as far as I know, to any material used to "sand" bowling balls.

First, wet the ball and/or or the material (sandpaper or Scotch-Brite pad) with
a spray of water (the finer the spray the better; old CLEAN windex bottles; lens cleaners will do fine). Then turn on spinner; then apply pressure with the "material".

The idea is to dampen the surface of the ball with a mist of water. The water acts like a lubricant between the ball's cover and the sanding material. This makes the cuts more even and smooth; it also prevents the sanding material from wearing away too quickly plus prevents too much material from being removed from the ball at one time.

It's like oil when using an Arkansas stone to sharpen a knife.

The water also helps to prevent the fine ball coverstock dust from flying up into the air and your breathing it in.

Well I did read the instructions as to "how to sand"; however, I was wondering if some of you prefer to sand from the cup upto the top of the ball or just from the top down to the cup as it spins.

cheers

when I sand, I was sanding form the top of the ball down to the cup as the ball spins while keeping constant presure on the sandpaper or scotch brite pad.

Yes, I do use water......

I dont think it matters if top to bottom or bottom to top.  Some go in both directions.

If you mean all the way from top down to cup vs top down to middle, then, I go from top to middle.

Label side refers to side with the holes.  Best to center the ball with the center of the span.  When ball spins, both thumb and fingerholes will spin at same spot.

Thanks Grunt

I've sanded two balls with the actual label up first.  I'll throw them today and see what kind of result they will give me.  Hopefully, it wont be erractic.

Cheers
