Title: 2,4, 6! (no 8)
Post by: lefty50 on September 05, 2013, 07:16:07 PM
I should know better than start this thread, but here we go.

I confess that I own a ball spinner and typically sand only two sides of the ball. I have trouble believing that sanding all six sides of the ball will make a dramatic change in the final results. I do however sometimes crosshatch the sanding process which I guess equates to four sides of the ball. Long story made short, how many of you actually saand all six sides of the bowling ball? Four sides? A paltry 2 sides?
Seriously, have you actually seen a difference between two, four, or six sides?

Thanks in advance

I do six sides for 180, 360 and 500 grits but only four for the higher ones. That combination seems to give me as close as I can get to a factory finish.

I'll crosshatch with varying degrees of grit, and apply polish depending on the reaction needed. I'll also look at how much it flares and how wide the rings are.

I do 2 sides.

I only do 4 sides when I need to do a complete resurface or in preping for an oil extraction.

6 if the ball is real bad, but normally only 4.

Most of the time it's 4 for me.

I only do two sides.  Being that the spinner itself only covers up less than half the ball, I can hit every inch of the balls surface doing two sides.  If I am doing an extensive resurface; which is extremely rare, I might do 4 sides.  But, with standard maintenance, I do two sides, clean and dull, and then polish.  I have noticed no difference in ball reaction from ball to ball in the years I have been doing this.

I crosshatch 500 grit. Then I go straight to whatever surface I want and I do it by hand w a dry pad.

I only do 2 sides in the direction that is perpendicular to my track.

I usually only sand two sides but I will vary which two sides, sometimes top/bottom sometimes side/side.

I don't do sides (other than the outside), I do directions.  I sand the preliminary grits one direction and the final grit two directions, at 90 degrees.  --  JohnP
