Well really the main difference, and main reason why people prefer wet sanding is that it keeps the dust down, whereas wet sanding keeps it more clear.

The reason you wet sand when refinishing a ball is two fold. As The BowlingKid25 said it keeps the dust down but the main reason for wet sanding is to keep the sanding disk from loading up and creating a hit and miss result. Wet sanding can be messy but to get consistent material removal it is a must.

Another MAJOR purpose of wet sanding is to reduce the amount of the sanded material that is in the air and that you breathe in. That is not a good thing!!

No matter how macho it is to not wear an air mask, you should. Death from lung cancer and other posisble illnesses is not a pleasant experience. I wonder what the death rate is for drillers since resin came into use around 1994 and how much lung injuries and diseases have increased for this job?
