rough buff over..rough buff??
« on: November 14, 2008, 05:18:19 AM »
Sounds dumb, I know.

But here's what happened. I own two balls that have the activator+ cover that's finished in RB, the Prime Zone and the Awesome Flip.

Both balls were rolling out and seemed to be burning out mid-lane so I rarely used them. On one occasion, I got a fairly good scuff on the surface of the PZ and wanted see if it would "buff out". So, I used a liquid cleaning to take the surface dirt off, then applied RB using my spinner and got the mark off.

The next time I used the ball, the ball seemed to get better length and have a better move off the breakpoint rather than a rolling out. So, I used the ball in two different houses over the next two months and began to ave about 220 with it in both leagues

Last week, I bought the AF and experienced the same thing. The AF clear the heads easily then seemed to roll out in the mids. So, I did the same thing and applied a coat of RB over the RB finish already on it. The ball came to life and I got the good midlane read with a hard continuous turn off the breakpoint and no roll out!

Any takes on this?

Each application of Rough Buff compound (or any polish) will delay the hook more and make the ball save more energy for later on the lane.

A better option, in my opinion, is to have less surface underneath the polish or compound (perhaps 1000 or so) to give you a better result. Layer upon layer of "gunk" tends to clog the coverstock's pores and the ball may get too "squirty" or unpredictable at the break point. For extreme dry lanes you may even try 2000 abralon before applying the compound or polish. Good luck.

The balls had too much surface, no matter what it was, for your ball speed AND for the amount of oil on which you were bowling.

Rough Buff is basically a rubbing compound with a very aggressive abrasive in it. It acts like sandpaper and smoothes out the surface making it smoother and adds a very light shine, depending on how much pressure you apply, for how long. The disadvantage is what you have is an unknown and where do you go from there if you need a change.

I agree with notclay. You can achieve similar results using sandpaper or Abralon or Valentino's sanding discs, but their advantage is that the surface is repeatable: you know what girt level you used.

Plus you can always use a non-abrasive polish like Brunswick's High Gloss or Valentino's Snake Oil to get more length, with the same advantage: the underlying grit remains the same. If any further changes are needed, you know precisely what to change and how.

Try taking the awesome flip and hitting it with a coat of secret sauce and give it a nice light shine to it gave me a late strong flip as I wanted. Looks exactly like OOB but seems to not be as snappy and a little smoother. May work for you as well.
