Ball spinner adventure
« on: January 05, 2006, 02:08:47 PM »
Tonight I decided to try and mess with my original x-factors coverstock. Since the ball has over 300 games on it, never resurfaced(just re-polished) and it is moving erraticly down the lanes, I've decided to give the vertex 1/2 hp ball spinner a go.

The results are so-so, but here is what I did.

I first wet sanded the coverstock with 320 grit sand paper (all 6 sides). Then I wet sponged the ball afterwards to clean it. Then to top it all off, I polished it with storms xtra shine. I used the hand applicator pads to apply polish. The same pads you buy at autozone to apply polish. I got the ball to where it looks like a marble, yet feels tacky. However, I still see some visible swirl marks from where I sanded.

Question....

Should I have sanded it up to a higher grit before the polish?

Should I have used a scotch brite pad instead of sand paper?

Was I wrong to use Xtra shine? Should I have used Step 2 instead?

Overall, no harm done. My original xfactor is not my go to ball anymore so I figured tonight would be a nice time to mess with it. Any suggestions or tips are very welcome.

You should have used a higher grit before polishing.
Here are the steps I used to get my X back to factory or as close as I could anyway.

Maroon Scotchbrite (320), 6 sides, 1 minutes each
Green Scotchbrite (600), 6 sides, 2 minutes each
Gray Scotchbrite (1000), 6 sides, 2 minutes each
1500 grit paper, 6 sides, 2 minutes each
Storm Step 2 on a wool pad, 4 sides, 30 seconds each side

All steps were done using a Contour Abrasion Block (CAB by Taxi Products)
I also use a digital cooking timer to make sure my times stay consistent.

Thanks a bunch StormTrack....

I'll keep that in mind. Using that ball spinner sure makes a hell of a mess while wet sanding. I'll keep what you had to say in mind.

However, my question to you is where can I find the gray and maroon scotch brite pads? I'm curious as to most hardware stores carry just the green ones.

Yes one heck of a mess I have mine in a big storage tub like you can get at Walmart or similar stores.
Do you have a CAB if not I suggest you get one they make life easier and ensure a even suface.

I'd like to know where I can purchase a cab. For now, I'll focus on the scotch brite pads and the Storm steps 1,2,3.

You've been a tremendous help.

They do not latch on, but you can press down hard enough with cabs so that it keeps it in place its kind of like imagining a paper towel covering a bowl and pressing it against a surface).

They stick well enough that you can pick the cab up by holding the scotchbright. I have never had one slip.
