I've never really tried playing with the coverstocks on any of my equipment so I have a few questions. Is it possible to use something like a scotchbrite pad on a ball without using a spinner? I don't have access to one here at school so if possible I would like to do it by hand. I have some balls I really don't use much any more due to overlap, so I want to play around a bit to see what they can do. Specifically, I want to take the surface on my El Nino down to maybe 800 or so, and scuff up my Sapphire Zone as well. Any input you guys can give would be great.

Taking a ball down in grit is possible without a spinner. It just takes really long and a lot of elbow grease. Go in small circles and work your way all the way around the ball. Polishing, I think you may be able to, but its a lot harder and takes longer and you cant get a very high grit of polish.

Dan -- You can do it without a spinner, but it's a lot of work. Remember, per the rules you have to do the whole ball, not just the track area. Isn't there a pro shop in the area that would do the work on a spinner for you at a moderate price? -- JohnP

John- Yes there is a proshop here in town, I just wanted to see if it was feasable to do by hand. Sounds like I need to get some serious ambition if I want to do it by hand, I may just have to go to the proshop to see what I can do.

to take the surface down best way is to use a spinner and dont know how i live without one. But if you dont have the option best bet is scotch brite pads different grits to take surface down more. White is like 1000 grit , green is like 600 grit and red is like 320 grit roughly, and to polish surface would suggest doing it by hand use the lustre king at your local center.

Put it on a table, spin it with ur left hand while holding the scotch brite with your right hand. Go up and down liek you would on a spinner. It will take a long time though pry. I do this on my dull balls to keep them dull, but i have never tried lets say takign the polish off a ball to make it dull.

I bought a turntable like thing from one of our £1 shops.
I use it when Im working on the grips of a ball. I would think you could use it to scuff up a ball with a dog ring to keep the ball centered.

Hi Teek, Aussies.... I dont know.
Theyre rubber ring dog toys thet you can use to stand your spare ball on when theres no room on the return.

A spinner can be made inexpensively if your handy. They pretty much come pre assembled as drill presses (mini benchtop models). And you get the option of variable speed which is nice. Just be careful when making and balancing a ball cup if they are out of round or out of balance they WILL throw a ball.
