Secret Sauce Underlining Grit Question
« on: May 09, 2008, 02:20:53 AM »
I am looking to polish up my Cell and also repolishing my Momentum with the secret sauce and wanted to know if there was an ideal grit level that the polish needs to be applied to?  If I applied the polish over both at the OOB grit level (2000 and 4000 respectively) would that be completely pointless?

Not pointless, but you have to figure it out for yourself....  You see the secret sauce is a secret.  The value of the grit in the "secret sauce" is a secret, direct quote from when I asked this question.   Also it's twice as expensive now that we all like it and we have an idea of how to use it.

No, it is more expensive now because it got bought out by a big company that determined it was being sold under-priced, so they raised the price to fall in with the rest of their products.

I never recommend sanding a ball higher than 1000 before the Sauce. Unless you are bowling on complete fry and choppy dirt wood...LOL!!

Anyways...I have done several Cell's at Nationals and they do not work well over 1000. They do not pick up early enough and get squirty. They are just too smooth.

You will get earlier reactions with each lower grit you use before applying the Sauce...

It is the most versatile polish on the market. Hands down.

. . . hmmm
. . . I just resurfaced 5 balls (Pink Rasp, XXL, XXXL, Cherry C/2, Pearl Viper)
. . . from 360 to 4000 grit Abralon and hit them with the sauce
. . . I'm going to the lanes and see
. . . how they perform on brokern down lanes
. . . I was thinking at 400-450 revs at 16.5 mph
. . . 4000 grit with the sauce would be perfect

Roy,
How did you make out??

I have had several people contact me after looking for the big backend the Sauce creates and not getting it.

They all shined the ball after using 2000-4000 grits to prep and the ball skated too far.

4000+Sauce for broken down patterns is A-OK!!

Underlying grit matters for ALL polishes.  As far as the Secret Sauce, I'll agree with what the creator said.  I've tried it on a couple pieces over a 2000 Abralon and it turned the balls into darts.  I've had the best luck applying it over nothing higher than 600.

. . . well, I'm happy with the results
. . . I was able to play 10 boards straight up -
. . . I'm unable to do that in quite a while
. . . The balls went longer which was what I was looking for
. . . the lanes here are on the drier side.
. . . slowed down my speed to 15.5 mph
. . . and couldn't miss the pocket - not a single brooklyn
. . . I also resurfaced the XXXL to 4000 grit and applied the sauce
. . . no missed 10's in 4 games - amazing!

there's no secret in the sauce...

I made some experiments and analysis and know what the stuff is and what it does... it po0lishes... simple as can be.

it is a water suspension of a very fine abrassive and polishes almost anything... I did it on my Mum's car's bumper that was scratched and the part looks like new!
plastic
I did it on my kitchen knife which had scratches (very fine ones) and it looks like knew
metal
I did it on my bowling ball... well that is the purpose of the sauce isn't it.

to answer the initial question:

the grit simply says how big the grinding parts on your paper/abralon/mirlon is.
the bigger the rougher the surface
the polish now just takes away something more and smoothens out this roughness.
so a 600+polish will react 4 sure different than a 2000+ polish

the polish can not make the surface 100% planar but it will make a difference.

see it that way:

you have after sanding the ball "valleys and mountains" on your ball.
the contact area of the ball in the oil has increased as it has a higher surface and more absorbtion
but it also has lost contact area with the lane.
result: the ball will hook in the oil but not take of on the backend
now when you polish that ball you take off the tip of your mountains and make them smooth... the surface slightly decreases while the contact area with the lane increases (the tips of your mountains get wider... broader etc.)
so what you do in fact is you shift the ball's motion towards the backend.
But the overall result is different than a ball with a higher grit etc.

this is how I see it

I thought the sauce was grit-less?  That's why it was approved for use during competition?  I'll have to see if the posts are still around, or maybe they got deleted.

the material is so fine... talking about a "grit" is not possible anymore I think.

at some point it is futile to try to categorize things...

I got some magic dust from beans and the stuf is ultra fine...

I looked back and it does contain an abrasive.  I'm sure a couple of times that Bean's has said he couldn't give an exact grit reading as it depends on the beginning surface, time, and pressure used.

The Secret Sauce is a very high quality polish that does contain abrasives. It does not have a slip agent in it. You will get different reactions off the oil line depending on what grit the ball was at before polishing as well as what type of ball it is. It is all potential. It will increase the grit of the ball after using. To what number is purely a guess. It depends on many factors. What makes it better is the smaller amount you use and the quickness and ease of use.

Without sounding like a salesman...You really have to try it to know how much better we think it is.

It contains no waxes or petroleum distillates..

100% residue free.

I must've had abrasive confused with additives:

Beans' Secret Sauce Bowling Ball Polish

You should try my polish. It works great by hand and even better on a spinner. I have 4oz. trials for $6.00 shipped. I accept Paypal. Thanks beans

My polish has no additives or slip agents. It shines the ball to increase length but after you feel the tackiness of the ball, you will understand why it does not lose backend reaction. I have 4oz. samples available as well as retail bottles in:

8 oz
16 oz
32 oz
64 oz
1 gallon bottles

I'm still experimenting but so far I have found that 400 to 600 surface on solids before using the Secret Sauce and 800 to 1000 on pearls before using the Sauce give me results that I can use.  Early, I did try putting the Sauce on OOB ball surfaces and got too much length, so generally I am now using a few steps below the OOB finish and then applying the Sauce.

Grayson....
You are correct on the abrasives part... It has 'em..

Not so much on the suspension agents...

Also,
The Magic Dust was not even close to the same additives in the Secret Sauce..

Nice try!!
