Rubbing Alcohol
« on: September 06, 2007, 06:56:20 AM »
A buddy recently told me that cleaning my reactive bowling ball (black widow pearl) will kill my ball faster. Just wondering if there was any truth to this? Many people have told me to clean it with alcohol, but he swears that it will make it lose reaction faster.

Rubbing alcohol is not the greatest cleaner ever, but it is safe to use on bowling balls.  It's alright for taking dirt off the surface but it doesn't break down lane oil or remove it from inside the coverstock.

There are much better cleaners out there.  The usual poor-man's solution is a mixture of half Simple Green, half rubbing alcohol, half water, or some other combination of those three.  If you want an honest ball cleaner, Track (nee Powerhouse) Power Wash is a good regular cleaner, it can be used during competition, as is the Legends cleaner, though it is only approved for use before or after competition.  Track's Clean and Dull is the best deep cleaner.

ok let's see it this way:

Bowling balls on general are made of urethan resin (the coverstock to be exact)
Urethan resin is a very very very robust synthetic material and not aceton which desolves some plastics can solvate it. So why should rubbing alcohol(isopropyl alcohol) do it any harm?

and not cleaning your ball will for sure kill it! my 0.02

Three halfs, shelley?

Maybe I should ask you to become my accountant.  If you could get me three halfs of my pay, I'd be more than happy!  Not three halfs of my bills, though!

It's a strong mixture, apparently.

Cleaning your ball with a bowling-ball specific cleaner IMMEDIATELY after using it AND before putting it into the bag will delay the day when you have to treat the ball to restore lost performance from either oil absprtion or from plasticizer migrating into the track, depending on which manufacturer you believe.

Cleaning a ball PROPERLY never has and mever will have th effect of "killing" a ball. I would ask your friend 2 questions: 1. where did he get such an idea, and 2, how does he take care of his balls? Personally, I, only from what you have told me, would have a tendency to NEVER listen to anything he said regarding bowling ever again.
