Title: De-oiling leaves voids in the ball?????
Post by: Aloarjr810 on March 29, 2014, 06:07:01 PM
Okay here's a new one, at least to me.

A post about how De-oiling a ball leaves voids in it where the oil had been. Like it was ate into the filler like a termite.

Quote
Just got back from being at the pro shop for de-oiling my Roto Grip. Part of the conversation entailed the fact that if you de-oil every 50-75 games then the 4th time the ball needs de-oiling you should consider replacement, or the next time for sure.

Interesting fact that Mike was sharing with me, is that the oil is absorbed into the cover stock and because the covers are so thin, the oil then begins to seep into the inner portion. So, if you cut a used ball in half, then you would see the oil seepage look like ant tracks. Once you de-oil the ball, then the ant track is just a void. After so many de-oils, and so many voids, the ball won't react the same.

It would appear that ignorance, indeed, is bliss.

I didn't know there was enough acid in lane oil to eat through resin.

So, let me see if I have this right.

The oil soaks into the cover, then into deeper regions of the ball. When it reaches the "inner core" part of the ball, it somehow liquifies the inner core, which is then bled out with the old oil, leaving a void on the inside of the ball?

I really don't think this is correct.  Even if the conditioner does reach that level of the core, and even if it did soften it up a bit, I really don't think it would dissolve it to the point it would leave voids in the interior of the ball.

Sounds more like an unsubstatiable sales pitch to me, trying to build up the sales with "made up" statistics that are virtually unverifiable.

I know dudes still using balls from 10-15 years ago. If this tale were true, these balls should be hollow by now, shouldn't they?

It's honestly amazing what someone will believe or buy into...it definitely makes you feel better about yourself!
I guess logic is never a variable in some parts of life eh?

Okay heres a update

Quote
I have no reason to doubt Mike as he drills on the tour, is a ball rep, and has seen the manufacturer cut the ball in half to display what happens in the testing.

Jayhawk has a great surface scanner im sure they could accurately answer this without bias.

Then again who are we to doubt the gospel of pba driller or ball rep. Im sure the manufacture of said equipment is eager to post this on their website so we can all no the truth and buy new equipment sooner.

How would a surface scanner show if there are voids inside the ball?

The only thing drilling on the PBA truck proves is you are willing to work 12 hours a day 6 days a week for peanuts, and until recently, travel around the country for the privilege to do so.

I don't know who "Mike" is, and I still don't believe it will impact the normal league or tournament bowlers I know.

A new purpose for a weight hole. A visual gauge to see when your ball needs to be replaced. LOL

There would be a easy test, just take a ball pour a bunch of lane oil in the thumb hole and let it soak in and see if it dissolves the inside of the ball.

Good one!  A "dull purpose" weight hole. :)

It appears that "Mike" is Mike Calderon

You can see him here:http://eboniteinternational.com/news-events/story/ebonite_international_gears_up_for_pba_world_series_of_bowling (http://eboniteinternational.com/news-events/story/ebonite_international_gears_up_for_pba_world_series_of_bowling)

I'm going to take a guess that this was something that was taken out of context or somehow miss worded.

Calderon's a good guy…………until you need him to return any of the favors you ever did for him.  Then his memory seems to get very short.

Update:
According to Calderon It's as suspected, this was a miscommunication, misquoted, out of context situation.

So no voids created by the oil.

So we can forget about it. At least theres not something else to have to worry about.

There's your explanation, hes part of the ebonite team!!!  There stuff use to die pretty quick....  Nobody really even uses it in my area any more so I'm not sure bout the newer equipment.
