discoloration on track
« on: July 04, 2021, 02:37:42 PM »
I first saw this on my hustle ink. i thought that was just some wear but I noticed them again on my money badger tour and it has less than 10 games on it.  There are two white lines that go around the ball and it appears to be where my track is. My Iq tour has some lines on it as well but not as prominent as the money badger tour.

What could be causing that?

It's just plasticizer reacting with oil from the friction. It doesn't happen very often since the balls are baked during production to lessen the chance for excess plasticizer leaching out of balls. It won't hurt your ball or track area. If anything it helps to keep oil out of your track.

It’s good to know it’s not hurting the performance of the ball.  The white lines on a black ball strange to see.

Actually, that can be a very good thing, as it will be a good indication of when you should resurface your ball. I had something similar happen some 30 years ago with my Ebonite Turbo/X, and thought something was wrong with the ball. Instead, not only did it show me where my track area was, but showed how much I have used the ball (at the time, I preferred using it over the NuLine X-Calibur I had in the same bag with the same drill.

Once I saw that at the tournament I was at, immediately after getting home I took that ball to the shop for a resurface, as I had a pretty worn out track area.

Here’s the confusion.  I have less than 10 games on my money badger tour and the lines began forming. Now, I have to admit I changed the surface twice and the lines formed after using it after the adding polish to it.

Edit-changes the surface to 3k and then 2k with polish using a jost pad and a sia air pad.  Polish was from motiv.

It's just called phazing. When heat is introduced to resin of any ball manufacturer including black reactive resin balls there will be a color change to dark purple with white streaks around the entire surface of all bowling balls. I even have few red balls from 20 yrs ago that are almost pinkish white now.

I added two pics of the ball.  I was told by a friend resurfacing it will take care of it.

The pictures look like wear from the lanes, especially high friction areas on the lanes. Does your center ever oil?

At lease you don't have a blue track from that STUPID blue oil they use on TV.
Balls: Motiv Jackal Ambush, Motiv Trident Abyss, Motiv Mythic Jackal, Motiv Trident Odyssey, Motiv Hydra and Motiv Plastic Jackal. All made in the USA.

There is oil on the lanes.  I would think the whole track area should have friction lines not use the two ends of the flare rings.

Part of your ball track will be in the oil and not have the wear.  It could easily be after your ball exits the oil pattern, though.

I sent the inquiry to storm and just sent pictures to them.  I’ll see what they say.

NAILED IT! Its exactly what JUSTLANE said. It's friction wear lines showing after the ball hits the dry areas of the lane. When I see this, it tells me that I didn't use the right tool for that particular lane condition! The lanes you're bowling on don't have quite enough oil to sustain the pieces you're using. That is all. I get them all the time!

Yeah but phazing looks cool, this just looks like the lane scratched up his ball.

Storm tech support stated it was friction that is causing it.  My pso said the same.  Even though it’s polished it still does that.

I think it was the right tool because it was a fresh 42 foot pattern.I didn’t use it after the middle of the second game because it was beginning to burn up.

They are five year old overlays, so they aren’t burnt up wood lanes.

Like I told storm they performance is fine.  I just want to explain to people why there are lines on a new ball.
