Or do most people think 500 grit is overkill? I keep my mastermind at 600 grit (green scotchbrite pad but close enough for this conversation) for use on the flood. I had to bring it out in practice Sunday night because my nightmare at 4,000 wasn't finishing well because of the oil, and the mastermind was amazing even at such a low grit

I'm bowling on Paris and typically use maroon scotchbrite on my Guru and GB2; amazing results.

The Burgandy Hammer is OOB at 500 grit. However, due to the embargo of lane oil in Chattanooga, I never see anything higher than medium.

500 grit is awesome for blending out the lane if their is enough oil in the front. The pattern doesn't even have to be "flooded" just as long as the ball stores enough. I've used 500 grit on 37-40 ft patterns before on hard synthetics when other bowlers are using less surface and I have a moderately high rev rate.

My two best nights have been throwing my mastermind. They are actually the two only nights I have thrown it. I am starting to think I need to get back to throwing control rather than angular

I use 500 grit for sport shots.
I would not use 500 grit on house shots. I don't like blowing holes in the middle of the pattern with that much surface. It forces me inside further (and quickly too) - which is not something I like doing all that much since I lose carry.

I use to never throw polished equipment because I liked control. Then I started using higher grits and polish to keep the lanes from getting chewed up. Now My average is lower because I haven't been able to adjust well

If 500 grit works for you on a house shot - go for it, use it. It's a personal preference and if it works for you, awesome. For myself personally, I've done it a few times and usually the night didn't end so well.

I do. I have it on my Shout (agressive layout with double thumb) and a Scream (weaker layout )
On aggressive equipment, I would only be able to use it on heavier oil.

A friend of mines uses a Lights Out at 500 abralon, no polish, sport shot, old wood. He throws it a lot slower but he loves the reaction he gets.

I don't mean use 500 on every ball every night. It just happened to be what I needed on Sunday. This Sunday, I may on the opposite end of the spectrum throwing urethane. I just mean in general, I may go back to using a little surface like 2,000 or 4,000 on my benchmark ball

I've done it a couple of times on sport/tournament patterns when I needed my Rogue Cell and Defiant to read earlier and blend out heavy volume. I was able to score well. However, it's not something I would normally use on THS.

Never on a THS. However, when our house shot plays fresh up front, I use a Mastermind drilled strong at 500/1000 no polish for the first game to game and a half and it is killer- the definition of control plus great carry.

I once threw an Apex Obsession finished at 360 grit. Lane man put oil in the stripper tank.. that was a flood!

I have used 500 before, but need to be selective about it. The volume needs to dictate that kind of surface. Nearly anything I'd use at 500 works better for me at 1000, but that's just me...

The only time I use 500 grit is when I polish a ball. Depending on the ball, some I will use 500 grit and polish, some 1000 grit and polish and some 2000 git and polish. As far as using 500 and no polish, I haven't done that for quite sometime. Like Clay, 1000 is the lowest I go for a ball without polish.
