Carburetor Cleaner??
« on: October 15, 2005, 11:27:54 AM »
I was talking to a older gentleman yesterday an we started talking about ball cleaners, he pops up with that he cleans his with carburetor cleaner to make it super tacky.  I say yeah and your coverstock is probably ruined too.  But he said no and he has got the same ball reaction out of a Track EMB for about 3 or 4 years now.

Have any of you heard or done this??

Carb cleaner will leave an oily residue on the surface. AT least every single carb cleaner I have ever used in the garage left a residue behind.

ALso the solvent used in carb cleaner may not be a legal chemical for use on balls.

Just my 2 cents.

Ok, I knew it was a very strange, odd thing to clean your balls with.

I had a guy come in with an old Hammer Nail, asked me to plug and redrill the thumb. He leaves the shop and I take the ball out of the box only to smell laquer thinner fumes. I put the ball back in teh box and set it in the closet until he returned the following day, presented the box to him and informed him I would not do work on the ball and why. He just smirked and left.

I would have set it ... on fire to see what happened. (only kidding)
Heck, even in the closet it could have been dangerous. Those fumes are nothing to kid about, within enclosed spaces.

I put it in a trash can liner before returning it to the box, the evening he was due to pick it up I set it outside the shop door. I was afraid one of my customers might light one up and we'd all be telaportated to another location.

In writing and reeading this, it's funny, like a bad sitcom or cartoon. In real life, this is deadly serious; yet some people insist that life is like a freaking cartoon! Too much TV I guess ....

...Aren't you you the guy who used to joke about using lighter fluid and a brillo pad.    Apparently someone was listening.

Joking is one thing; doing is another.

How much more blatant a joke can there be??

I was bowling w/ a guy in the 90's(when reactives were pretty new) and he said to use unleaded gasoline or if you can get it varsol. I kept wondering if I was going to see him on the news after he blew himself up. FLASH..."Explosion in SE Houston today while man cleaning his bowling balls with regular unleaded, said unidentified gentleman was cleaning his bowling equipment when a spark of static electricity caused the gas to explode. He was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition with 1st, 2nd, & 3rd degree burns to his hands, face, & torso..." What makes people come up w/ these strange cleaners is it because they are to cheap to buy the correct cleaners, or is it the companies of the ball cleaners refuse to sell at a reasonable price?
