Powerhouse Matte Finish replacements...

This stuff was a fine compound finish used before Abralon became a common finishing abrasive.

Does anyone know if the abrasives in Matte Finish broke down and left a finish finer than the 1200-grit and 15-micron level this stuff was supposed to finish balls to?

For those that have used it in the past and moved on, what are you using that's giving you similar results now?

I don't know know for sure that it broke down but I suspect that it did. Whenever I used it on the spinner I always seemed to get a very fine finish, finer than the 1200 grit US that it should. When I used it by hand I got what I think was closer to what was intended. (Added note: this is/was an impression, as I have no way of measuring such a finish.)

I also use Track's Clean and Smooth, a 1500 grit equivalent to Matte Finish's 1200 grit. It does break down similarly to Brunswick's Rough Buff. If I use Clean and Smooth over 4000 grit Abralon I get a polished ball.

That said, I still have some Clean and Smooth and some Matte Finish. Got them from Buddies when I learned Ebonite's Powerhouse would not be marketing them anymore. They still advertise they have 5 oz bottles for $9:

I'd get some if I were you. Otherwise you'll probably need to buy Valentino's 3000 FEPA grit pads. They're 1500 grit US. That's the closest I've seen except for some woodworking places that has P2500 grit, but they're hard to find.

I've found the Lanemaster's surface cutting compound is very similar to the Matte Finish polish. According to LM tech dept, the surface cutting compound will bring the ball from 320 up to 1200. I've had good results using it over a base of 360 abralon.

ANd it doesn't put any shine, no matter how mild, on the ball with the spinner?

I'd love to try some. Too bad it only seems to come in quart sizes and it ain't cheap.

That's why I use a white SB pad after using it. Takes the "light shine" off the ball and as far as I can tell, doesn't change the grit, not enough to tell, anyway.

With my normal "technique" on the spinner, over the 360 abralon, I would describe the finish as "matte," truly in between dull and polished. I did try it by hand on one ball and the result was dull. I have not experimented with higher base grits and/or higher amounts of pressure on the spinner.

I used to use a product called Kwik Cut (thought charlest did too) which also had some form of abrasives in it.  I'm not sure on the ending grit but I used it to remove finer sanding lines after plug work.  Just thought I'd share..

Back in my first shop in the 80's, I used to use Dupont's rubbing compound which also had some grit in the product as well but tried some in the 90's and the composite was no longer the same.

I DID, Rick. I used mine all up. I found it very similar to Clean and Sheen, but messier to use. Ulitmate's Quick-Kut & Polish came in a very awkward to use container. I bought a 2nd quart of C&S when Track went out of business. Never re-ordered Quick-Kut. Both basically 320/400 grit (US) -> ~ 1000 grit (US).
