Cleaning the ball with hot water
« on: May 28, 2007, 07:57:41 PM »
I wrote a small instruction:

Dead Ball? Squirting through the breakpoint? Here’s a simple method everyone can do to get some life back into one’s bowling ball:

Use a bucket or another vessel big enough to have the ball totally covered!

Put the ball in by putting the thumbhole downwards so no water will get into it.
You might want to cover any other holes with some kind of tape but in my opinion this is not only not necessary but in fact a waste of most tapes as the warm water will solvate the glue and in worst case the tape simply will get off and swim around in the water…

Next step is to fill the vessel with warm water. Don’t use too hot water (around 50°C/120°F are ok)! The coverstock material might crack as thermal expansion and contraction occurs.

Now comes the tricky part. What to add into the water? Some say NOTHING! Ebonite says so. I say add soap. Dish cleaner liquid or anything else just something mild that can keep oil and dirt in the water. No harsh conditions etc..

Wait for approx 20 minutes.

Take the ball out and clean it with fresh warm water.

Let it dry and make sure no water is left in the finger holes etc.

If you haven’t cleaned the ball for a long time just redo the whole process with fresh warm water two times or even more often till you get the feeling it is enough (no more oil on the water’s surface)

Why redo? Why not just wait longer? ´The problem is: Waiting longer won’t help much! There won’t come out more oil as the water can only take a certain amount of it and most of the oil also will stay on the ball!
But water will be soaked into the ball with time! Don’t worry that is not much. In Fact I have no prove about water in the coverstock but a certain change in colour occurs and I guess that water is what causes that effect.
And I have read several reports of balls getting heavier!

So rather redo the whole thing with fresh water for a short waiting time than let it soak up water… cause I found on pearl balls these “long time” balls don’t hook either.

Have fun and bowl well!

Or you can put it in the dishwasher.  Just put in the regular amount of detergent.  And DO NOT use any heated dry or high temp. wash cycles.  (Almost forgot to mention that!)
