Title: How long to sand when changing grits?
Post by: Mike E on September 21, 2005, 01:21:47 AM
Just bought a ball spinner over the summer and was wondering how long should I sand each side of the ball. I've got the 6 side method down and for my first attempt I used a timer and sanded each surface for 45 seconds. Just wondering how long you guys do yours for?
                                  Thanks,

It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  If it's just a clean-up or surface freshening I utilize 6 "cycles (up and down motion) per each of the 6 sided method.  For a full resurface it depends on how bad the ball is.

Are you holding the sandpaper / Abrolon pad by hand or did you buy one of the "cups?"

I was experimenting with both abralon and trizact. Took a 1500 finish on a sonic boom up to 4000. First did 2000 pad then 4000 abralon. There are only 4 trizact grits so I worked my way all the way up to the white one on a HPD particle. Yes I used a CAB for all sanding.

A lot depends on how much pressure you apply, but I never go over 30 seconds per "side", unless I have good size cuts I am working out.

Just as a surface adjustment, that sort of thing, I would not suggest over 20-30 seconds, again, a LOT depends on the pressure.
