Title: Kwik Patch and accelerator
Post by: J_w73 on March 08, 2013, 02:35:02 AM
Does anyone know of a good alternative to the Kwik Patch.  The two bottles are going for over $25 and if I can do the same thing for less, I would like to  I'm assuming this is just some type of cyanoacrylate super glue and an accelerator.. I'm not exactly sure what type of accelerator they use but many items can make cyanoacrylate cure a lot faster.. Anything that takes the acid out of the glue, even water, will work.  The problem I have seen is many cyanoacrylates turn white when accelerated..

Just thinking, but what if you used the normal cyanoacrylate without accelerator, but just did the "patch" one smaller area at a time so it will cure better and still be clear.

Once the whole area has been filled, just cut and smooth as you would with ball plug. Just an idea that MIGHT work.

It won't harden without accelerator.  Same reason it doesn't harden in the bottle.

Does it change anything if you hit the area first with accelerator then use the cyanoacrylate?  Just want to know if it still turns white.

Usually.  Glue just doesn't stay clear when it cures.  There may be some that does, I just never researched it that far.  Most hobby stores have a large selection of different glues.

For small nicks and gouges I have had success with a 2 part 5 minute epoxy.  It stayed clear enough that the color of the ball underneath the repair showed through.
