Title: mission fix.
Post by: 2hander on March 10, 2011, 02:03:54 AM
Hi guys i have a original mission that i have shot all my high games with and my only 299 game with. Ive never resurfaced it or anything because ive always been afraid it will kill my ball " as my proshop did once to a jigsaw". Anyways i had it put it an oven/ rejuvinator about three months ago for half the normal time and it worked wonders shot a 299 the next week. My question is, the ball is losing its hook again, i left it in the car and the cold oil spots are showing, What would you recomend doing to get the oil out. Ball has well over 100 games if not more.

Back to the pro shop... or throw it in the dish washer.

ya but "my" proshop doesn't believe in the oven. Where i got it done was at a tournament 2 hours away. So could i do it in my oven on the lowest temp possible and just always watch it and wipe the oil off?

Whatever you do, don't put it in your oven.

I use a dishwasher, no detergent and without the heated dry feature. Or you can give it a hot water bath in a 5 gallon bucket with warm water and a couple of drops of dawn. Repeat until the oil doesn't seep out any longer. I have also tried the sun method. Put a ball cup in a 5 gallon bucket, put the ball on the cup and cover the entire thing with a dark colored garbage bag and sit the entire thing in the sun for a few hours.

But again, do not put the ball in your home oven. You might get away with it, but odds are, you will ruin the ball.

i'd suggest the following:

1.  find a proshop that does believe in the revivor oven
2.  try a hot water bath

i would not do:

1.  home oven technique
2.  dishwasher technique

after 30 minutes take the ball out and wipe it down, check the clarity of the water and replace water if needed.

Use the link below. Mo Pinel gives a very good description on the best way to do a hot water bath.

Little off topic but what would make you say to not do the dishwasher method? Essentially it is the same as a hot water bath.

I'm with you Bighook, I use a dishwasher exclusively and it works just fine with a lot less hassle.

@ bighook

that's just my preference.  i believe dishwasher water gets a lot hotter than needed.  i don't use any of these methods to be honest, but this has been what has worked for some of my customers

When I went to the release demo I asked the question awhile back. I was told in the powerhouse machine...

- 30 seconds at 500 ab
- 30 seconds at 1000 ab
- 30 seconds at 2000 ab

I have used the dishwasher many many times had no problems. On of my sons teammate had marvel that had 100+ games on it was going to get rid of it. Cleaned it with the dishwasher put the box finish on it he said it was as good as new. shot 279 in their Jr high league.

If you have a Convection Oven and set it on the lowest temperature, it will do the same thing as a revivor does. The Convection Oven has a fan that keeps the air circulating, thus no hot spots. Before moving from the country to town 2 years ago, we had a Convection Oven and I used it on my balls all the time, leaving them in the oven 10-15 minutes at a time before removing the ball. The ball would get only warm and never hot.

The house we moved to in town doesn't have a Convection Oven, only a standard oven, so I haven't gotten up the courage yet to try it and not sure I will with a regular oven, but Dave800 has ne thinking about it though.

i have a friend who tried the home oven on a virtual energy the cover of the ball came out looking like the ground out in the desert, cracks running all through it. the oven it to hot, even at its lowest temp. also the ball is not rotating, i would not try it. now this will sound wierd, but it has worked on all my bowling balls for many many years. go to your local pro shop buy a ball cup, buy the required aberlon pad for the ball you are de-oiling, get in the shower & take a nice hot shower with the ball. use some dishsoap & the aberlon pad & you`ll be pleasantly suprised. i use a shower so i dont have to keep checking the water for to much oil.

I ended up trying the oven technique. I said WTH. You would not believe the OUNCES of oil that came out. it took 12 times in an out with a time of 8 mins in at 175 degrees. I must have had enough oil to change the oil in my car lol lol jk. But anyways oven technique worked great!!! ball is now at least 15 boards stronger and starts up feet earlier.

seems to me that you need to find a compentent pro shop that knows how to use a revivor oven and just get it baked there!!!my pro shop only charges me a very small fee to do this and it works great!!no putting it in a regular oven or dishwasher!!!

Go hard or go home!!!!!Bowl your best...ALWAYS!!!

At 175 you may have gotten plasticizers as well as oil.  How did the ball do on the lanes?  --  JohnP

The ball worked like new. Hooked a ton more than i ever saw the ball hook. And it wasnt the lane condition, it was the ball. Because i threw my 2.0 and it hooked on its normal line so then i threw the mission at about board 9. right about over second arrow. and it came back to miss the head pin to the left and hit the 2 pin!!!.
