is this ball on the verge of...
« on: March 02, 2017, 12:51:09 AM »
cracking?

I pulled out a lane master ball from the storage. I prepared the cover for tomorrow night's league, but I found a hair line crack all the way around connecting at ring finger hole.

The ball sat in the storage, climate controlled facility, for 4 months or so. Last summers tourney up in reno was the last time I used the ball.

is this ball on the verge of cracking?

There are many potential reasons for a ball to crack. The hairline split is or seems to be the beginning of a serious crack. If it's been in climate controlled storage and it begins at the ring finger hole, I'd suspect that the cause if centered around that hole. Potential causes could be -
- pin too close to the hole.
- too much super glue used to glue the insert.
- hole not beveled properly.
- hole was drilled too fast with too dull a bit.

If it's less than a year old, I'd bring it back to where it was bought and see if they can help return it to LM. If it's more than a year old ...

Since the crack goes around the ball, it sounds like it's ready to go to that bowling ball graveyard.  The cover probably continued to cure over the time period, or possibly the core expanded.  As we use these balls the lane conditioner helps keep the covers more pliable.  If they sit too long, even at room temperatures, they can crack.  There are other possible factors, as charlest suggested.

Every ball that has ever cracked on me was sitting on a shelf in my office, but in all but one case, I hadn't thrown it for awhile.  One time I actually heard it crack, which was weird.

It was almost a "pop" sound.  If you put two balls on the carpet and then roll one softly into the other that would be close.  Not a loud crack, jut a pop.  My descriptive skills are lacking on this one...

I've had balls crack starting from the finger hole, but this hair line crack on the LM ball isn't as deep as the Mariana Trench unlike the other balls. It's like the scratch you get from the old storm bags lol. their ball cups used to scratch my equipment. it's like running a needle at 21 gauge or smaller around the ball with light pressure.

In any case, it's damage goods.

I know that sound. I last heard it when my Virtual Energy cracked and I was in the adjoining room. Even with all the balls I have in that room, somehow I knew which ball cracked.

Hard to describe the sound as it's very distinct and/or unique.

I got to hear that distinctive "pop" just this week! I was downstairs collecting balls to give away, and suddenly heard it.

It was from my almost new Cyclone, which I never use because I didn't really like it's on lane reaction. Crack started at the middle finger on one side of the ball, all the way around to the weight hole on the other side!

Ahhh well. Gonna bury it out back as a garden decoration!
