What would happen?
« on: September 21, 2008, 10:39:01 AM »
What would happen if you changed from wet dry sandpaper to abralon in the middle of sanding? If you used 500 grit sandpaper to get the scratches and grooves out then switched to abralon would it change anything in the ball reaction or the finished product?

It would work fine. Every time you change the grit, regardless of what it is, will change the whole surface of the ball. I have one of the ebonite resurfacing machines that has three interchangable pads that rotate the ball together. One time I used 600 grit sand paper, 1000 grit abralon, and a white scotch brite pad at the same time, and the ball still came out looking and reacting well. Whatever the last grit you put on a ball is, that matters the most.

Okay i'm looking at just buying a 2000 abralon pad, but before that to get out all the grooves I would use a medium grit sandpaper. Instead of buying all the abralon pads I'd rather just buy one pad and save 500%.

If you are just going to buy one pad, I think 2000 would be the best choice. Just be careful not to dig too hard into it with the sandpaper before you go to 2000.

But you can't go from a 500 grit Abralon pad to a 2000 grit Abralon pad or from a 1000 grit Abralon pad to a 4000 grit Abralon pad. The 4000 (2000) pad would not smooth out all the lines from the 1000 (5000) grit pad. Just like with sandpaper, you can't go from 400 grit to 1000 grit or 600 grit to 1500 grit. The jump in the size of the abrasive is too large.

Yes the ball will only be used for about 50 games till I go to provincials. The storm instructions say to use step 4 and 5 after every 40 to 60 games which is 600 grit sandpaper, then use storm step 2 polish to bring it back to OOB conditions. If I used the 600 grit and got the grooves out then used the abralon pad before polishing the ball would it still leave the grooves in it from the coarser sandpaper? I'm not looking at much of a resurface but a little touch up to get a little better ball reaction before the tournament.

I think you're confusing the issues here.

There is no need to "get the grooves out" after sanding with 600 grit sandpaper. 600 grit sandpaper or 600 grit anything leaves "grooves" or sanding lines consistent with 600 grit. They are supposed to be there. If you take them out, it is no longer at 600 grit.

REMEMBER that Step 2 or Step anything from Storm has abrasives in it. It is like Brunswick's Rough Buff. They are not true polishes by themselves. They also have abrasives in them IN ADDITION to the polish. The abrasives will smooth out the sanding lines or "grooves". If you use the right amount of Step XX, they will smooth out the ball and put a polish on it.

If you must, you can take the ball a step closer to the final finish by using an Abralon pad AFTER you use the 600 grit sandpaper. 2000 grit Abralon is equivalent to 1000 grit, the next finer step up the ladder from 600 grit. It will replace the 600 grit "grooves" with 1000 grit "grooves". So you can use that, before applying whatever Storm STep ## finishing compound you have to use.

FYI Sanding lines should always be there on the ball. That's what sandpaper or Abralon does. The point is what is the grit level at which you can no longer see them easily. For me it's somewhere around 4000 grit Abralon or 2000 grit US/CAMI. Each level of abrasives makes the sanding lines finer and finer.

Okay that does make a little more sense.
