How to use Abralon?
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:36:07 PM »
I have a ball spinner and have always just used ScotchBrite pads to adjust the surface of my bowling balls.  I want to try Abralon but I am not sure if they can be used at home with just a ball spinner or only on a ball resurfacer (since they are discs).

they can be used with your spinner just like the scotchbrite pads. They are just round with a foam backing. You can also use the back side to apply polish after they are worn out.

Is there a special procedure for properly adjusting the surface with Abralon?

I use them just as 3M pads on my home-made spinner. Before applying them, I spray some water with a drop of soap to soften the water and break the surface, and also spray some water onto the pad. It should be wet, but not totally soaked or dripping.

I would not use Abralon pads (or any sanding material of 1.000 grit or higher) without a good water film. The material from the ball surface will stick onto and in the abrasive and render it ineffective, even killing it with heat and resin clogging. Additionally, you avoid the fine dust (even though it splashes around as wet goo...).

I would also recommend using it with a Taxi Contour Abrasion Block to avoid sanding a flat spot on the ball.  I haven't used Abralon, but with Scotchbrite pads the hook and loop on the CAB holds the pad in place very well.  --  JohnP

Where is the best place to purchase a Taxi Contour Abrasion Block?

I use a CAB block with the Abralon discs.  The hook-and-loop really doesn't help much, but the CAB block does do a good job of holding the disc in place during the sanding process.

I use with my hand and just a water bucket nearby.  works great and dunk to rinse.  no need to get extravagant.  very simple and easy to use.

The common practice says you should treat the ball as if it were a cube and make sure you cover all 6 sides.

1. Holes facing up, sand for 30 seconds
2. Rotate the ball 180deg to where holes are facing down, sand for 30 seconds
3. Rotate the ball 90deg , sand
4. Rotate the ball 180deg , sand
5. Rotate right 90deg, sand
6. Rotate right 180deg, sand

I use a spray bottle of watter to wet the ball and or abralon pad. Keeping it wet will cut down on heat and also prevent the sanding pad from becoming cloggged with material

I use the CAB block for both Abralon Pads and Scotch Brite Pads.

Sir Bowl-A-Lot -- Many of the on line bowling supply sites carry them.  One example is below, you may find a better price somewhere else.  --  JohnP

I'm making the jump to Abralon. A few questions.

I use a CAB and have a spinner. I have found some sites that sell the pads at a reasonable price. Some/most are hook and loop, others are foam back. Do I want the hook and loop ones or will those be best because of the CAB? It appears that most pads sold thru bowling sites have hook and loop backs.

The knock on scotch brite is that the pads do not clean up well and do not last. Abralon offers more choices of grit and boasts a 5+ longer life than SBrite. Some guys talk of polishing with abralon. I only used my Scotch brite to clean with products like Clean and Dull and to alter or renew surface. I try to pretty much stay with certain grit surfaces that match OOB types and shy away from customizing. What's the dope on polishing with the pads?

I use them on a spinner all the time. The nice thing is if you also have water flow (on your spinner) they work even better.

I can't say that they last longer than scotchbrite pads. I really don't believe that they do, in our shop's experience, but they're worth whatever you pay for them.

I use the foam back Abralon pads with a Cab and they stick just fine.
