Rough Buff vs Ebonite Factory Finish
« on: August 07, 2007, 03:32:21 AM »
What's the difference? Or am I confused, and the Ebonite stuff is closer to the Brunswick High Gloss?

Thanks

C'mon Jeff... I was making a direct comparison to the OOB Rough Buff finish that is the standard procedure from the factory.  I wasn't comparing any other underlying initial grit to the 2000 abralon finish.

Figured I was pretty clear with my statement.

SOrry. Given what I have seen on here, others may not understand what you're implying. I'd rather err on the side of details and have those who DO know slough it off, while those who think that just because there are some numbers on a jar of polish that no matter how you apply that polish, it produces only that level of polish.

I know that they are both polishes, but they don't overlap do they? Say I took my Cobalt Pearl, applied a 500 grit surface base and finished it with RB, instead of HG, would the end result be the same then?

To my understanding, RB adds length to the ball, but reacts a little earlier on the lane than the High Gloss Polish. Correct?

I bought a quart of RB and High Gloss; I can always experiment and see what works best.

No, they are NOT both polishes. Please re-read what I wrote above. They do different things to balls, and RB does not, by definition, add length to a ball.

quote:

All Brunswick balls that are finished with Rough Buff are first sanded to 220 grit; then RB is applied. However, and this is very important, if you sand the ball to 320 or 400 or 600 or any higher grit and then apply RB, the final finish will be much smoother than that 2000 grit approximation. And the ball will skid much further and hook less at the backend, thus handling less oil.

RB is a rubbing compound; as such it has abrasives in it.It will make whatever base upon which it is applied much finer and smoother (higher grit number).

You can't just use it on any surface and get the equivalent of 2000 grit matte finish. There is no magic in RB. The way you apply it PLUS what you apply it to both go into determining what the finish is.

Listen to the wise man! Absolutely correct. RB is pretty abrasive and needs some coarse base grit to be useful - unless you want an all skid ball! With less than 400 grit base, you might get a semi-matte, slightly glossy ball, but the compound will have cluttered the surface and remarkably reduce grip.

no problem; we all read too fast and make unwarranted assumptions sometimes. I plead guilty far too often to suit myself.

Jeff is correct on everything that he said when it comes to RB. The only thing I think he left out is that you are to use it with water on the spinner. This is what Ric Hamlin said to a guy last year at the launch show for the mammonth and the morich awsome revs. He was asked if the 220 grit OOB prep or any prep with the RB was to be used by itself or with water. He stated that you must use the water or the micro beeds will over smooth the ball and you will not get anywhere close to the OOB finish you should. So dont just go and use RB by itself. Also even though it looks like it adds length, it isnt a polish the only reason it adds length is because of how smooth the surface gets after the use of RB. I find RB to be great when you need to get a ball ready for a really dry condition. I use it ontop, without water, of the 4000 abralon I keep my desert heat at. So by the time I stop using it, my Desert Heat wont turn on much of anything. So just remember use water with RB also, unless you want a high perfomance plastic ball.

PS.

The stuff Jeff knew was all info I was going to state until I got to his post. Everyone can get this info, you just have to ask questions to the right people.
