Ok, Newbie questions 101... I just tried out my new ball spinner... 1/3HP from Vertex. Observations and questions below. Would appreciate feedback please.

2 sided sanding...

- Spinner is in a large size Rubbermaid storage tub... Good call, area stays nice and clean.
- Ran the following tests for comparison

1. 500 Abralon by hand
2. 500 Abralon in spinner
3. 1000 abralon in spinner
4. 1000 grit sandpaper in spinner

The victim was an old Dynothane Vendetta....

I know Abralon is not exactly half the value of sandpaper, but for puposes of the test, it's close enough.

500 Abralon by hand... Whew, REALLY dull. I'd expect that since it's about 260 grit sandpaper.

500 Abralon with spinner and generous amounts of water.. - Actually looks more like what I'm used to seeing when the proshop did 1000 grit sandpaper. I expected it much duller... Hmmm

1000 grit sandpaper. Yup, looks just about right, feels about right. 500 Abralon is only SLIGHTLY duller and rougher, a surprisingly small difference.

2000 Abrlaon - Should be pretty close to 1000 sandpaper, right? Sure looks shinier to me, feels a smoother too.

The following thoughts pop into my mind..

- Abralon will look shinier because of the construction. Don't worry, all's well.

- Maybe not enough pressure or time... I used medium pressure and 10-15 seconds per side.

- Not to be sloppy, but seriously, how anal retentive should I be about wiping down the spinner when done? Let it air dry, towel it off, or being super careful to dry it off?

All comments are strictly "For whatever it's worth". I've been using a 1/3 hp Vertex for 6+ years (I've lost track).

Area stays clean. Inside of tub does get DIRTY!

According to Mirka, designer and manufacturer of Abralon - approx 360 grit.

Concern/problem: was the sandpaper marked 1000 grit or P1000 grit???
Most of the new sandpaper (even in the US) is already being manufacctured under FEPA standards. So it's likely to be P1000 grit, which is approx. 550 grit US.

This sort of confirms my hypothesis: 500 grit Abralon vs P1000 grit sandpaper.
Since your hand and/or eyes can easily tell the difference, it is actually a large difference as far as the use of a bowling ball is concerned.

Again, depends on whether the sandpaper is 1000 grit or P1000 grit.
2000 grit Abralon = 2000 grit FEPA = 1000 grit US.
2000 grit Abralon (P2000) should be much finer (twice as fine) than P1000 grit sandpaper.
(There's another factor involved: it's much easier to insure Abralon provides a smooth finish than sandpaper does. If I might suggest something: use a damp sponge as a backing to sandpaper. It helps.)

FWIW: Medium to light is all that's needed most of the time. Agreed.

I don't do it. To some degree, cleanness helps but I don't get crazy about it.

Excellent data, thanks to both. Charlest, you were dead on re: grit. It's not marked with a P, but I checked the 3m website and sure enough, it's FEPA rated. Makes a lot more sense now....

I've heard nothing but good reports on the Vertex spinners, and looking for excellent results. Very minor wobble, seems like a quality piece of gear.

Wobble seems to have more to do with where you put the CG and how much imbalance is left in the ball. Since the cup is only 1/3 the height of the ball, there's only so much you can do to balance the spinning mass. Try to ceneter the CG as much as possible. Also you'll find less wobble when the CG is in the cup as opposed to on the top.

Those rules are not engraved in stone.

You can most certainly sand and polish with a one speed spinner with zero problems whatsoever. If you have a 2nd speed, then you can potentially get a higher gloss finish more easily and more quickly with that faster speed. However, I have a one speed 1/3 hp Vertex and I can put a shine on a ball, if necessary, that will make you replace every mirror in your house. It is neither essential nor desireable to do that with 99.9999% of the balls you will polish with a spinner.

Hey lefty,

One more thing, not sure where you have your spinner placed (table top or ground) but the more and more you use the spinner, I'd recommend to place it at a comfortable height. In time, it can cause some discomfort to our bodies depending how much time you spend on it and the body positioning we place ourselves in.

I understand that I must do this way more then most because it's my job but as your "friends" (haha) find out you have one, you can end up working on this more then you'd think. Just a small tip...

I recommend getting a wash basin/bin from a home supply store, and a good spray bottle too.

Also for the first month, be sure to have a practice ball that you wouldn't mind ruining. Practice technique and how to finesse the coverstock. You'll definitely want to try out some of our Snake Oil polish because it is fool proof.

You and FBM wouldn't be a problem...I'd just have to show you guys which direction the switch goes for slow or fast!

Actually, I think FBM stopped my spinner while it was running on high speed to prove a point...aaargh!

I like this idea, but why cut the bottom of the bag out? Instead, place the bag over the tub with the bottom at the top of the tub. Now push the bottom of the bag down into the bottom of the tub. The sides of the bag would be hanging down outside the tub. Place the spinner into the tub (and bag). Trim the sides of the bag and tape as necessary. When it gets dirty, throw the old bag out and replace it. You might have to make a small hole in the bottom of the bag to release the air as you put it in place. -- JohnP
