Title: Sanding (or polishing)instructions
Post by: JohnN on November 10, 2017, 08:57:37 AM
Several spinner companies have instructions on how to sand a ball. Usually their first step its to put the label up. What do they consider the label ? Storm has their name, their insignia, and the ball name on their balls. Radical has company name and ball name, DV8 has the ball name and their saying on the ball. I had one pso tell me to start with the grip on the side and then do the usual rotations. I used to start with my grip up. How do you do it and is there a correct first step ?

In the past The label was typically considered around the CG.

But It really doesn't matter what label or logo you use or if you start with the grip on top first (Which is what most do) or the side.Just as long as you remember where you started and flip the ball properly there after.

Yeah don't worry about labels use the finger holes and their orientation.  Finger holes up, finger holes down.  2 Finger holes up and then thumb hole up.  If I am doing a really deep resurface I will use all six sides on initial step (finger holes to the side flipped both ways).

Does it really matter as long as you have a method of keeping it equal on all four sides?

But logically, the label would be where the ball name is engraved.

HackJandy, thanks. That's the way I've been doing 4 sided. Milorafferty, according to one page I've seen (Jayhawk?) the way you sand it affects the roll on the ball. I haven't experimented to find out if it's true.

Oops, should have thanked Aloarjr810 as he was the original poster of the diagram.

Yeah it doesn't but all my pieces are punched up so don't have to look in certain spots for certain brands on different ball etc.  Yeah you get different reactions depending on if you only sand against or with the track and even if you only do part of the ball but that is illegal.  I just do all four sides because I am not good enough to need to tweak my ball reaction that fine.

The direction of your sanding lines in relation to the bow tie does have an effect on the ball roll. But that only really applies to the final surface. The underlying pattern should be cross hatch.

While the orientation of the sanding lines can have some impact on how the ball reads the lane, it's kind of a nitpicky adjustment anymore.

It had slightly more of a relevance back in the Urethane/plastic days, But even then the majority of players couldn't tell a difference if they did it to their ball.
