Author Topic: Sanding 4 sides vs 6 sides? (Read 13319 times)

Ok, I know this has been discussed before, but I can seem to find it. So please forgive me if I ask again.
My question concerns sanding 4 sides vs 6 sides and is way any better than the other. It seems I see quite often the recommendation to do only 4 sides. But it seems to me that misses 2 sides. Maybe that does not matter? I am also wondering if doing the 4 side method, which side should one start on and finish on? And again, does it really matter?

The only time I sand in more than one direction is on my final step, when I sand in either two or three directions. And that's so the sanding lines won't all be in the same direction. -- JohnP

While some will only do two sides, and some will do four, I pefer six, but I adjust the time I sand each side accordingly.

For example, when sanding just two sides I would normally sand each side around 15 passes. When I sand four sides I would sand each side around 8 passes, and when I sand six sides I tend to use around 4 passes. This is just for coverstock maintenance or adjustment.

When resurfacing, I always sand all six sides, usually always passing over each of the six sides with each grit. If the ball isn''t in need of a full resurface but needs more than a touch up I might start on the first two sides with 180 grit abralon (if I really want to dig into the coverstock), then move up to 360 for the next two sides, and then 500 for the next two sides. Then I''ll make a decision based upon what I want the final surface to be like.

I might just jump straight to a 4000 grit and polish, or I could go to a straight 2000, or I might step up from 1000 to 2000 to 4000...it all really depends on the ball and what I''m looking for. You really have an unlimited number of options.

I am with charlest. I only do 2 turns for each grit obviously to sand the whole ball, then go to the next grit alternating what way the fingers and thumb lay.

i only do 4 sides on the real coarse grits, when resurfacing. Never had a ball go out of round on me.

You start doing 4-6 sides on every grit, and your pads will be worn out really quick and you will be spending alot of money. Not worth it.

A bowling ball is like a globe. You can divide it into hemispheres. You have east and west hemispheres. You have north and south hemispheres. I never hear of front and back hemispheres in reference to a globe. 4 sided sanding makes sense to me.

Last book I read on the subject says there are 11 dimensions. Best as I could understand is that the other dimensions are "folded" up in a manner which makes them invisible to us, but we know they're there because we can observe the effects.

Ahhh-greed!!! Especially when a perfect pocket hit leaves a 8 or 9 pin standing. Sometimes I swear I've seen the ball pass right through a pin!!

I sand six sides up to 400 grit. After that 600 on up i go to 4 sides. Once I hit 1000 grit or better I only do two sides.

I do 4 sides, starting with thumb up,thumb down,thumb to the side with fingers down,thumb to the side with fingers up. It''s all personal preference.
