Trizact vs Abralon
« on: September 08, 2005, 07:29:37 AM »
OK, I'm using abralon pads as stated in my previous post. Is trizact & abralon comparable? I just want to make sure that the abralon pads will cut the particles while refinishing a ball. I'm told the trizact does, but not positive about abralon. Knowledgeable replies please. Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, Abralon pads are closer to scotch-brite or other nylon-type pads.  I was under the impression that they would not cut down particles (but rather effect the material around the particles).  They may work with some of the softer particle materials...  I don't know about that.  I think trizact pads are still the only ones which will "cut" ceramic particles found in the brunswick produced balls.

Found this post online:
quote:

If you haven't used them, they are an abrasive (silicon carbide) fabric attached to a foam backing. The fabric lets the water get through, (you use them wet), and it seems to cut down on the amount of splatter flinged around because the foam holds the water in place better.

The downside is that they can be pricey and they tend to load up faster than a Scotch-Brite. Lifespan is another issue that I'm looking at now. Time will tell.
I was told that Ebonite uses them on machines for the final finish at a rate of approx. 1 1/2 minutes per ball for about 30 balls, then they change the pads. I expect to get a good 30-45 minutes of use out of the pads I'm using on my spinner...we'll see.

pm your question to Ron Hickland or e-mail Ebonite directly you will get an exact answer, i think strapper is right but not sure he is either. I use them all the time and they do seem to cut around the particle but would need a microscope to know for sure

yeah agreed.  I am not 100% sure, but that was my impression from what I have read and seen personally.  Ebonite would be able to answer for sure...  please post as I would be interested in hearing their thoughts.

HMMM, thanks for your replies, because according to lane 1, when resurfacing, you must be sure the particles are being cut along with the resin. If not, then the particles stick out & there is less, or no resin contacting the lane surface. That makes perfect sense & it could also be the reason for some of the lane damage, as well as giving the impression your ball died. No resin contact, no reaction! Interesting.

yes, could be... almost like throwing a urethane ball (all particles contacting lane surface... no resin).  Ebonite states that when resurfacing particle equipment that you would polish the ball first.  This removes or loosens the "broken" particles (guess some are hollow and crack or something?).  Then after polishing, sand beginning at the lowest grit and work your way up to the desired finish.  I think its a good idea in theory, but I'm not sure how big of a difference it actually makes.
