Best way to use clean and dull
« on: March 09, 2010, 07:05:41 AM »
What is the best way to use clean and dull?
I heard this stuff is really good and bought a couple of containers online.  I received the older Track labeled stuff.  I guess it is now in the Ebonite Powerhouse line.

Well I tried it out and it doesn't seem to be THAT great.. I actually don't see that it is taking that much oil /dirt out or off the ball.

I personally swear by it.  It works wonders when used with my spinner.  I know plenty of folks that use it by hand with stellar results as well.

I don't find it to work that well either...by hand that is.  Maybe on a spinner it is much greater.

All I do is apply a quarter size dab on a damp cloth and clean the ball as if were a regular spray cleaner.

It's best used using a 4 step process:

1)  Apply to a dry cloth
2)  Proceed to clean the ball
3)  Wipe the ball with a separate wet/damp cloth to remove any residue
4)  Dry with a dry cloth

I always use three separate cloths when cleaning using Clean 'N Dull.

Do you let it sit or soak into the ball..?/
The label talks about applying it and then spraying with water and letting it sit..

I did this and it didn't seem to do much either..
I wonder if mine isn't doing what it is supposed to because it is old..
haven't really ever heard of cleaners losing their potency.. espcially when sealed..

This will be scorned by some, ( the use of my hands) but here is the way I have been doing it for 2-3 years now and always get a very clean, very tacky ball.

-Pour a line across the portion of the ball.
-Rub it all around the exposed side of the ball, I keep rubbing not allowing it to dry out/into the ball, surface stays slimy for about 1 minute.
-Take a wet towel and without much pressure go over the ball with spinner on (don''t burn it in like a polish. some people get a slight shine on the ball doing it that way) for about 20-30 seconds.
- Take dry towel and with light pressure (spinner on) clean the ball of any water/cleaner that is left.
-Turn over and repeat steps.

What you will come out with is a very tacky and clean bowling ball. I have tried the method of letting it sit and kinda evaporate in areas, and I have found the method i use above seems to get the ball much cleaner and looks as though it cleans deeper into the ball, because any oil shine that was present is gone and the ball looks new if it is dull(much easier to tell how well it cleaned)

Alot of people will say that you shouldn''t get this stuff on your hands. I don''t feel there is any danger to it, i get solvent and way worse stuff on my hands nearly every day from my type of work, and this is the least thing i am worried about. You could wear some latex gloves if you wanted.

This is a fail proof method. Oh and (J-w) my C&D is over 2 years old and it does not seem to be any different than new, so nothing to worry about.

I still feel that Lane Masters ball cleaner is just as good.

16 mph
17 degrees of tilt

when you're feeling blue,
just say to yourself "what would BallBaggins do?"

JW,

FWIW I use a variation of LaneHammer's method. I do use a rubber glove when I spread it. I use a Bounty paper towel to apply it. I try to do about 1/2 of theball at a time, keeping the surace wet with C&D, spreading it with the paper towel for about 45 seconds to a minute, more or less. Then I wipe it off with a damp paper towel (The new 1/2 sheets of Bounty work well for this.) still with the rubber glove on my hand, as a safety precatuion. Then I dry the half with a another 1/2 sheet of paper towel. Then I do the other half of the ball.

The ball should be very clean before you use it, because you should have cleaned the ball thoroughly with an every day cleaner before you left the center and before you put the ball back in your bag. If anything is left on the ball, it should only be ground-in oil-shine which most everyday cleaners cannot remove.

You should use Clean and Dull at home. That will remove the oil shine and hopefully extract some of the oil from just barely beneath the surface of the ball.

I do not know how you would see this ("taking the oil out of the ball"). I have never seen this. I believe there are chemicals that can help this happen. I would like to believe C&D does this. I have no direct proof that it does. I do have the indirect evidence to my eyes, based SOLELY on the behavior of my ball after I do this. It "seems", to my eyes, to "behave" better, more like a new ball in its hitting power and hooking power.
