Coverstock confusion
« on: November 27, 2007, 04:55:36 PM »
So I have a Storm Pyro at 2000 Abralon at the moment. The league I bowl in has either a really tough THS or a modified THS; either way my Pyro doesn't move very much off the spot. I was wondering if knocking it down from 2000 dull to 1000 polished would give me a better look? Maybe even 1000 dull? Thanks in advance!

The Pyro is a particle pearl -- it's going to be smoother and less aggressive off the spot than a regular pearl.  You may want to go up in practice and experiment with both dulling it up AND also try polishing it to see which reaction you like better.  Or, you may just be throwing the wrong ball for those lanes.  I've got an Awesome Revs for my particle pearl, and some nights it just won't turn the corner because it either hits friction too early or too late, and no matter where I play the lanes and no matter what hand position I use, it wants to not turn up very hard on the back and leaves weak 10 pins (i.e. last night when I missed the hole just once all night and shot a whopping 647...  I couldn't get an early enough read with my pearl equipment, and I'm having problems with the grip on my Special Agent at the moment, so I didn't want to throw it since I couldn't aim consistently with it, so I just stuck it out with the Awesome Revs)

Another thing you might want to look at is how many games do you have on the Pyro; if you have a substantial amount of games on the ball, you might want to look into baking the ball. Being a partical ball, it sucks up the oil a lot quicker than a solid or a pearl would, perhaps it just has lost it's hitting power.

Just another thought

I have actually just hit the Pyro with 500 Abralon and dunked it in a hot water bath last night. I'm gonna hit it back with 2000 on Monday. The reason I posed this question at first was that this ball gave me a great read up the boards and last time I tried this it was pretty ugly haha. But hopefully this bath will help it out. If not, I'm gonna go practice and tinker with the cover.

On a side note: What is the difference between 1500 polished and 4000 Abralon? Has anybody had a ball with both of these preps?

For resin pearls polished to the 1500 - 2000 grit range, as specified by the manufacturer, I have often found that by snding them up to 4000 grit, using Abralon pads, they will still be able to be used on the same amount of oil as the 1500 - 2000 grit polished, BUT they will be slightly earlier, slightly smoother and be able tohandle slightly more carrydown.

I have found similar results with resin solids, but more selectively, as not all solids respond as well as the pearls. It might have soemthing to do with the pearlization additive that stiffens the cover on pearls.

Thanks charlest. I only ask b/c I have a T-Road Pearl and it doesn't have the reaction that I was quite expecting, so I'm going to tinker with the coverstock to try and find the reaction I want.
