How to properly clean my spare ball?
« on: March 23, 2005, 06:31:31 AM »
I have a Columbia Blue Dot that is very dirty and nasty looking because it has never been cleaned before.  I use it for shooting my 10 pin only.  What is the safest type of cleaner to use?  I don't want to use any type of reactive ball cleaner since they all leave the finish tacky in order to increase traction.  I was thinking maybe Track's Delayed Traction, but I don't know.  I don't want this ball to wrinkle even an inch on dry.

I know people will disagree, but tape up the thumb holes. Fill up your sink half way with soapy warm water, and use a sponge or scotch brite to get off the marks, not saying its the best way, just works for me.

Can't you just put one of those in a Lustre King (if you can find one)? I was about to put my Zebra ball in one the next time I see one.

With my spare, as well as all my shiny balls I sand to 800 and then apply the polish.  It works well for me.  But a ball shiner at the center would be just fine for plastic.

I really like to use Neo Tec's Renew It and then apply Control It. Works really well.

Plain old rubbing alcohol with a little elbow grease does an adequate job on surface dirt and belt marks.  If you run into something that alcohol won't take off, Goo Gone or any similar citrus based cleaner will usually get it.  --  JohnP

for a spare ball, I would just (assuming you have a spinner), hit it with a scotchbrite and/or sand paper...  That will take any dirt, marks, etc off the surface. Then polish it back up...  1000 or 1500 grit.  I have cleaned up numerous "clear" spare balls this way and its amazing how good they come out...

I think it is safe to use any type of cleaner but just finish the ball with a car wax and that will take the surface completely off the ball. That is the only way I could get my target zone and clear werewolf to stop hooking.

Strapper, see if you can get your hands on some lane cleaner. I forget the brand that we were using but it works just as good as  going through the sanding and polish, but in a fraction of the time. Just put enough to wet the ball and just keep a fair amount of pressure on the ball. It will take off any marks and bring the finish to a glass like sheen. I did this with one of those bud bottle balls and it was like new.

Good point Dan, this would definitely be a better option (easier) if you just wanted to clean it up and get it to look decent... if it has a track, nicks, etc., and you want to remove them, then you would probably need the sand paper, etc...  As far as I know, most cleaners (with the exception of neo-tac hook-it...as it seems to melt plastic and rubber) are safe to use.

I just clean it sometimes then i use Storm's X-TRA SHINE. That puts the cover at 3500 grit, which insures the ball to slide slide slide!
