A good ball cleaner that will not remove polish ?
« on: June 28, 2008, 10:24:57 AM »
Any ideas ?

Are all cleaners ok to use on polished balls ?
Or are there some or all you should stay away from ?

Oh, as long as I'm on, do polished balls still soak up oil ?

Thanks.

A true polish has abrasive in it. It actually changes the grit of the surface. It does not leave a film or coating like a wax would do. Unless you are using a harsh solvent like acetone the polished surface should not change at all. Do not use cleaners that would contain any abrasives.

Every cleaner I've ever used keeps shiny balls shiny.  The best I've used has been Brunswick's Remove-All.  Good stuff.

Here is a shameless plug.... Try my Oil Off. Very good and very mild cleaner. Not harsh or dangerous. Instant Length is the same base cleaner with an oil repelling additive.  beans

Near as I can tell, all bowling ball specific cleaners are safe to use on polished balls, including Clean and Dull, which does not dull any ball. Bad name, great product.

Stay away from any cleaner containing acetone.

Yes, polished balls do absorb lane oil, but at a slower rate than dull balls because, one, their surface is usually sanded to a finer grit level than dull balls and, two, they are used on lower volumes of oil so their covers have less oil to soak up. But all resin balls absorb oil and they ALL eventually need some treatment to restore their loss of performance. This treatment period can vary from 30 games to 300 0r 500 games, depending.

All balls should be cleaned IMMEDIATELY after use and before you put them back in your bag. Some balls absorb oil so quickly these days that even waiting until you change your shoes may be too late. That is, the oil on the surface may be absorbed into the surface before you touch it. Cleaning your balls before you bowl the next time is a complete waste of time, in my opinion.
