Getting a weird reaction from a fresh coat of polish
« on: July 23, 2008, 10:41:00 AM »
I just took my Angular One, RXS 300 and 2 Raids and gave them hot water baths and took them down to 500 grit just to give them fresh coverstocks and brought them back up to the grits I was throwing them at for this summer. Now 1 of the Raids was at 4000 with no polish and it still rolls the same for me if not better. Now the other balls look really good surface wise with the new polish and they feels tacky but I just dont get the backend reaction out of them. I can see the ball rev up and start to try and turn because of the core but then it just gives up and goes straight. Theses balls were working fine before so I know there not burning up, they just dont snap off of the dry any more.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do to try and get the backend reaction back? I am using the Secret Sauce and this is the first time I have had this problem. Should I take them back down and put a lighter coat of polish on posibly? Any help is appreciated!

The Secret Sauce is an abrasive polish that will get your equipment TOO shiny if you aren't careful.  Use a lower surface, like 500 or 1000 abralon, then apply the Sauce.  You might also try Valentino Bowling's Snake Oil instead to see if you like one polish better than the other.  (I've never tried the Secret Sauce, but I experimented with the trial bottle of Snake Oil I got when I ordered some Frankentape and LOVED it.  I immediately purchased a 4 oz bottle of it and Resurrection)

the Beans Sauce is pretty wicked.  you need to go about 5-800 grit, then the Sauce.  otherwise its see you later hockey puck.

bowl-2-win,

If you're using Secret Sauce, definitely try this first:
sand to 800 - 1000 grit (US or nylon pad or 2000 grit Abralon) then try a light coat of SS. Then bowl with it.
DO not use a finer grit than 2000 grit Abralon (this is FEPA grade or "P") or 1000 grit US scale as an underlayment for Secret Sauce. In fact, I'd  suggest starting with 600 grit (green nylon pad) then apply a normal dose of Secret Sauce.

I'll publish some initial findings with 3 resin pearls and Secret Sauce in the next few days, for whatever it's worth.

I'm with Hellbound. Get the Valentino Resurrection and Snake oil and follow the directions exactly as they say and I don't think you will be sorry. I too had ill effects with the Beans Sauce, but the Valentino Products worked great for me.

I'm having the opposite experience. For me, 800 grit plus Beans sauce give me a great reaction. So far I'm having more trouble matching up with snake oil. My experiments are still ongoing but I haven't found the best base grit under the snake oil.

Just throwing it out there, i've found a fresh coat of polish really promotes skid, in a few games (more or less depending on numerous factors) the polish starts to "break" in a little bit and reaction increases. What i've found is I have a slightly worn white scotchbrite pad that i'll lightly hit the surface of the ball with on my spinner to eliminate the break in period.

Thinking about it now, I have never had a problem before but I have always used an under grit of 1000 or less. I will try a worn 4000 pad over the polish and if that dosent work I will take them to 1000 grit and then polish them again. Thanks again everyone!!

what polish exactly did you use?

I heard and found that some polishes (not beans!) needs to "burn in"
Which means the polish sits on the ball clogging the pores... preventing oil absorbtion and though the ball seems tacky... it will not move on the lane.
Unless the pores open up again with time... I know some proshops that even use that effect to get more length into a ball.

...give the ball another hot water bath after the polish... if that does not help the pores were not stuck in the first place and your polish didn't block them.

Black Magic is an example though I have never used that one and my knowledge is "2nd hand" as some might say

Guess I'll have to order some of that snake oil and resurrection to get a good picture and be able to compare them with bean's stuff.

I use gray pads which is 800/1000grit (worn pad...) as underlayed grit
