Vertex Mold Ball Spinner?
« on: May 01, 2007, 07:27:54 AM »
Who is using this spinner?  I'm considering buying the 1/2 hp model from Buddies and would like to here some opinions from those who are using this spinner.

Thanks,
Jermey

The on/off switch on my Vertex broke about 2 months after buying it. It was still able to make contact if I wiggled it in the right way. So, I took the switch apart and disabled it in the ON position, then plugged it into a surge protector.

The Vertex is a real work horse. I use it several times a week and it just keeps chugging along.

Buy a large plastic storage bin to put it in to keep solvents, etc from spewing out onto the walls, etc. The bins can be found for about $6 or $7 at Walmart.

I have one, I think I've had it for about 6 months now. I use mine probably about 3/4 times a week and yes it works great plus it also comes with a 3/4 HP motor so theres power to spare but also there for when you want to sand down the ball.

It come wiith a 3-way switch, left is the slow speed, center is off, and to the right is the high speed...

Here she is...

Bought my 1/2hp Vertex Mold spinner a few weeks ago.  Used it this past weekend for about 2 hours straight resurfacing several balls and altering surfaces on others.

Works great and I am very happy with it.  If I was to nitpick, here are the only things:

- Would be nice if it had a little faster speed...that being said, I could not slow it down by hand even with extremely firm pressure.  I understand you can rig the pulley for faster speeds as some have indicated.

- The base needs to be on a flat surface...otherwise it can wobble or tip if you put too much pressure on one side.

- Careful with the switch (this might be a reason to get a foot pedal).  I have my spinner in my big garage laundry tub sink with a light stream of water running and my spray bottle.  The switch is about 1 foot away, but obviously gets hit with some of the mist and or splash.  After a while...with wet hands, I would go to switch the spinner off and would be met with a nice little electrical shock to my hand.  I was pretty careful after that...messing with a plugged in motor and water is not for the faint of heart.

Other than that...it gets the results...with a nice mess to clean up afterwards

hey musky, why don't you go to the  local menard's or home depot and ask if they have a light switch foot peddle like for turning on and off your x-mas tree lights. it works for me. i have it stapled to a board so i can slide it back if it gets too close to the water with my foot. costs about $4.76 and works great for me. i actually made my own spinner (hope to have picures soon). i took my old treadmill motor off and mounted it on a cabinet. drilled some holes in the cast iron wheel that used to spin the belt and mounted a flower pot to it. mounted it with a bracet so it sits vertical. i also took the control panel and hooked it up so i can adjust the speed. i had to do that because the motor is 2 1/2 hp. it will go up to 8 mph. i was farting around when i first hooked it up and had the ball (an old shooter xl) going so fast, the finger insert flew right out,LOL. i think you could stand on it while it's running and it won't slow down a bit. sorry, i didn't mean to get carried away, try the foot peddle it's cheap.

The Vertex spinner is awesome. I've had mine for 3 years and never had a single problem. I've done 10 balls at a time and also did resurfacing. The motor never gets hot just warm. It has never shut off on me or anything. I think it has to be one of the best designed spinners ever made.

twckhorn, try menards or lowes, i got a switch you can use to turn on snd off for my x-mas tree with your foot. i used a staple gun and mounted it onto a board for stability, should cost about $4.95. works great, you can keep both hands free.
