"Cracking the shine"

I hear the expression "cracking" the shine a lot. If you had a new polished ball and wanted to do this how would you do it ?

For me I take a 2000 or 3000 pad lightly by hand

I generally take a well worn, and beat up old green pad and hit the ball on my spinner for about 10 seconds.

New 4k siaair or used 2k siaair pad.

Any ball including plastic that has a polished finish i do this to in order to make the ball useable.

Depends on the ball but I usually just hit it with a 4000 pad or do abralon steps starting at 500 then going up through the steps until you get 4000

The short and simple version is removing roughly half of the polish from the ball.  Or think of it as putting surface onto the polish, not onto the ball.  So you're just lightly trying to add some scratches into the polish, but not sand all the way through it.  Light pressure, minimal time, worn pad.
