Maintenance Schedule
« on: March 07, 2017, 12:34:53 PM »
I'm trying to get a maintenance schedule in place with my equipment. Aside from me reading through all the manufacturer recommendations, which I'll do, I want to hear what you do?

Rough Outline

-Wipe ball before every throw
-Clean after every set
-Touch with desired surface every 9-12 games
-Detox/Oil Extraction every 30-40 games
.....etc

How do you if at all approach polished equipment differently than sanded?

Using Remedy rx after every 2 to 3 frames, or depending what House I am bowling in. One house here just leaves belt marks/black tar on the ball. So before every frame I clean the ball. Also, I clean equipment after every game and set.

Clean and dull every month or 15 to 20 games.

Surface tweak depends on the ball. Those with polish and the type of polish can be every 3 to 12 games to reapply polish. It depends how many games played and the lane surface I bowl on.

I hardly leave the ball smooth or dull, so it varies.

I have not needed to de-oil any of my balls. With what I'm doing, it keeps the ball clean. Only friends of mine had their balls in the NuBall. Thanks milo lol.

I wouldn't approach different balls any differently.  For a simple arsenal, it is probably best to treat each ball the same.  What you have stated is better than what 99% of bowlers do and I also feel it is more than adequate.

If you have niche pieces that get used at different rates, then perhaps a special treatment for them.

The only down side I see is keeping track of games when more than one ball is used during a typical session.  I would maybe trade out the number of games to a time frame.  If you bowl say 10 games a week somewhat evenly distributed with 3 balls, then maybe once a quarter or so do maintenance on all of them.  Or one a month, whatever works for you.

I might try a time approach. I considered keeping running totals of games in my notes on my phone before maintenance sessions, but that might get messy.

For polished balls, I'd suggest
- keep a close eye on the track area. Once cleaned well, track marks require re-polishing. It could be 3 games or it could be 12 games. Re-polishing is quick and easy; so I wouldn't let any polished ball go more than 12 games.
- clean polished as you would dull, in every aspect. Use Clean and Dull at home as deep cleaner every 12 - 20 games.

Any dull ball I would refresh every 3 - 6 games. Any lane surface changes the given grit level after every bowling session. period. How much it changes depends on many factors.

How many seconds does it take to dampen an abrasive pad and go over the ball's surface by hand? 15 - 20 seconds for the whole operation? Maybe.
Is it worth it? That's up to you.

Re-do the entire surface from scratch (360 or 500 grit) every 35-50 games, more or less, for both polished and dull balls.

I wipe my ball after each shot, apply Motiv power cleaner to them after each set, refresh the cover every 6-12 games, and I have my balls a how water bath after each set..  not a single loss in reaction at all with this method. My equipment looks and works as if its brand new. Lucky me  :)
