« on: January 21, 2008, 02:27:02 PM »
I was wondering how oftern do you guys resurface your balls? I bowled 3 times a week and i clean them good everytime after using them. Bring them in to the pro shop having them dull and clean once a month....

For me, it depends on visual inspection, and if I feel a ball has lost its bite, tracked visibly out, lost its polish or just caught lots of scratches and nicks. Very subjective and "from the belly".

Normally, I de-oil the ball and just refresh the surface on my spinner at home. Hard to give a frequency, since I also have a broad arsenal that sees rather infrequent use on the lanes. I guess about every 50 games per ball would match, might be even more often, I am not sure and do not keep notes on this.

Nevertheless, since I do this frequently (plus ball cleaning after each use), I hardly feel the need for a true resurfacing.

Is your signature correct, and you currently average 130?  Honestly, skip spending the cash on a ball spinner.  You need to worry less about getting completely optimal ball reaction and worry more about getting to the pocket consistently and making your spares.  Take the money and invest it in getting a good coach to help you with the fundamentals.  All the equipment in the world isn't a substitute for a good armswing and the knowledge of how to use it.

When you average 190, then buy a 2nd strike ball.
I join in the chorus: sell all your strike balls except one and use the money to buy some good coaching lessons; then buy some serious pratice time.

work hard on practicing spares, just as much effort as you put into your first shot.  you can become a nice 180 avg bowler by picking up your spares consistently.  Identify what spares you are missing and work on them extra hard.  this will help you become a better bowler with more confidence. all the while work on your strike game and as you perfect your first ball you will leave less "tough" spares and make the game more manageable.  if you are mssing the pocket routinely then you are leaving tough spares.  we all miss them as the odds are against you.  leaving single pin spares like 7 , 8, 8, 10, and 4.  are all very makeable.  the goal would be to be 90% covering these.

Yes, i would consider stopping buying new equipment and rejuvinating your current equipment until you can pick up a lane ball off the rack and consistently throw 170-180 with it.  If you cant do that, you obviously can't hit your mark and can't pick up your spares.  Its very easy to get to the 190-200 league average.  People who are constantly tweaking their gear can already pick up spares and hit the pocket 95+% of the time and are looking to move their average from a 200-215 to a 230.

Get the basics down.  Like in any other sport, when you worry too much about your equipment, you start blaming your equipment for your inability.  Once you forget about improving your equipment you will be ready to improve your game.

Good luck!
