Who uses Scotch-Brite Pads?
« on: October 14, 2005, 05:09:35 PM »
Hi everyone,

So I was reading some posts and from what I gathered, I have these stats for the Scotch-brite pads.

White = 1200 Grit
Blue = 1000 Grit
Gray = 800 Grit
Green = 600 Grit
Maroon/Burgundy = 320 or 400?

I am planning on possibly purchasing a Vertex 1/2 hp spinner.
My buddy recommended Scotch-Brite pads. Do I have the grits right on these pads?

Thanks!
Ramtart

P.S. What are your experiences with these pads. Do you have to apply a lot of pressure or just enough to have it scuff the ball. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Almost everyone uses these.
The grits are right. Forget about the white one for bowling; you have to apply so much pressure to get it to do anything, that you will stop the motor from spinning and burn it out before you affect the ball's surface.

I have come across large volumes of smaller nylon pads backed by sponges; these are normally marketed in supermarkets for household cleaning. They are great because you soak the sponge, wring out most of the water and it's already wet for sanding. They conform to the hand and provide good surface coverage to the round shape of a ball. They come in packs of 20 or so and are sold in wharehouse places, like COSTCO and BJ's. I've seen them in blue (1000 grit)(which we also use at the kitchen sink since it does not scratch any kitchenware), green (600 grit) and maroon (320-400 grit).

I disagree with you charlest, on the white ones. I love to 'finish off' what ever I was doing with them. They are the last I'll use or I use them with Clean N Dull.

I'll use them after 1000 AB pads just to get any small particles off the ball before I'm done. Does it change the ball to 1200 ?, I doubt it, but to say forget them, I think you're missing out on a great 'finisher', also takes just the slightest off a polish that might have been a step or two, to high.

I was thinking the white was more around 1500. Charlest, I have no problem getting the white ones to work for me if using plenty of water. As long as I use a grey pad before the white pad, I can see and feel the difference between the two. White will almost leave a slight sheen look to it and it feels super smooth. You do have to apply a little more pressure for the white than with the others, but not much more. Nowhere near enough to slow the spinner down.

I agree with Charlest, the white pads do nothing as far as sanding the ball. I do however use one once in a while to very-very lightly dim a wee bit of the shine off a ball it I think I polished it too shinny.

Sorry, but I want grief and more aggravation, there are easier ways to find it.

If I want a 1200 grit finish, I'll use Ebonite's Matte Finish or a 1200 sandpaper. It is SO much easier to use than a white nylon pad. I do not want top damage my spinner's motor.

If I want 1500 grit, I use Track's Clean and SMooth or 1500 grit sandpaper.

Legend4Life,

If you get them to work, fine. Even with brand new ones, they required so much pressure, I stopped even the high torque motor on my 1/2 hp Vertex, which is stronger than the Donkee motor. Water should theoretically make them cut into the surface even less.

Guys, if you get them to work, fine. Really. I am just relating my experience and making recommendations on what I have been through/learned. Just trying to make easier on the newbies.

I have found the white pad does a great jobs to buff the ball, putting a stain finish on any ball. it was not meant to be a sanding pad. The other thing I found is it mades a great polishing pad. We use it to apply all polishes and finishes on a ball. Just keep it moist when appling polishes. Puts a fantastic shine on the equipment.
