Dry is killing me... help!!
« on: January 04, 2004, 11:51:36 PM »

Over the last three years I've bowled on nothing but floods and flat conditions. This year I have moved to different leagues and houses and the dry lane conditions are kicking my ass! I need some help!

I am 15 to 16 mph with about 250rpm, generally playing straight or some belly up boards. Primarily using a 105* layout (I guess it's a 2x5) to help get the length. Balls are an old Chaos (reliable and trusty, still hits great) and a new Threat (factory polished).

On the right condition I'm scoring just fine. The Threat is almost automatic on a lot of conditions, it really reacts great for me with nice skid and strong powerful controlled arc. In a month I've had a number of long strings with this ball (8 to 15 in a row).

However, in a few leagues, even these balls are hooking at the arrows. Not sure if the 2x5 gets into an axis tilt too early.... is there any other layout I should consider for more length?

Or... should I move deeper and try a "skid-flip" attack to the hole? If so, I assume I should look for a reactive ball... any specific type of weight block? and what layout?

Help...and thanks!

5 things come to mind and it depends how dry is dry and how you throw the ball.

1.
get  v2 Dry and drill it cg in palm and pin the right of the ring and polish it.
this ball dosen't move

2.
use a 135 deg drilling. place the Pin above bridge. I did this with Blade pearl plosihed to 2000. it worked well with high revs and gave me area where there was none. a shooter xl may be better for this or some other aysymetrical ball.

3.
using a 120 deg layout with the pin 3" high and above the pin to pap line.any pearl resin

4. use a 105 deg drilling and place the pin below bridge. be sure to get a 1-2 in pin ball.

5. use a strong lpastic ball. the XXXL.

If you looking for a new ball, perhaps a 3 peice core. High Rg Core, low RG diff., polished coverstock. And give it a 4x4½ drill maybe.. I dunno. Something that will make it roll longer.

Another thing I like to do on dryer lanes is get my thumb hole real tight.

On oilier lanes I leave it a little looser(not as much tape).

This can make a dramatic difference in the ability to drive your arm and ball along your line(which you have to do on dry).

I think my error is that the Threat works great on a wet-dry... oil in the heads, dry after that. But when it can't get thru the heads, I'm toast. And the Chaos is set up the same darn way,and is a solid.

I just got a copy of the Brunswick drilling opion chart and really like it. Thorough yet succinct.

The Threat is laid out in the what Brunswick would call the 3E layout. It's towards the low flare end of the scale. Hooks earlier than the 3L layout, which they recommend for hooking heads. The 3E layout, which they state is for early hooking heads, puts the pin above the fingers and at 5 3/4" from the PAP.

Maybe I should look at this layout more closely...any thoughts?
