lay out questions
« on: October 07, 2009, 01:33:12 AM »
hi,
i know the usual way of laying out the ball using say 4x4 will mean 4in from pin and 4in from mb right?

so now came across some drill chart that says lay out 4in from pin and say place mb at a strong position
so what is the distance of the mb?
so i know we need to find the intersection point if the distance from pap to pin and dustance from pap to mb and draw our grip's mid point from there in order to complete the lay out

and some ofthe msays placing at a certain degrees...

sorry but its so confusing

seems like only roto, storm and morich are the ones with the usual X by X way of explaining layout

thanks for the hassle in trying to explain to me

No a 4X4 means the Pin is 4" from the PAP and 4" from the CG(center of Gravity) not the MB (Mass Bias)

i m referring to the key drilling guide from storm on this
be it 4x4 meaning 4 from pap to pin or 4 from cg/mb/key
the question i asm asking is more of a concern to me where we are only given the measurement of say for example 4 in from pap and the other one is missing

No, for a ball with a marked mass bias, using this type of layout the second number is the PAP to mb distance.

Typically, the "strong" mb position for a right hander is about 1 - 2" right of the edge of the thumb hole.  Avoid mb locations and thumb hole sizes/pitches that will drill into the mb "pin".  I don't like this way of specifying a layout, I think you'll find that the "strong" position puts the mb 3 - 4" from the PAP.  --  JohnP

Sorry I was thinking of a unmarked ball.

I went back looked at the Storm Key drill sheet-

(EXAMPLE: 4x4 means a pin 4” from the PAP and mass
bias 4” from the PAP. This layout is very aggressive.)

According to most ball manufacturers, stong mass bias position is halfway between centerline and VAL.

A strong position for the MB is going to be 45 degrees. Where that falls in inches from pap will vary depending on the bowlers pap measurment. But I think John's mention of 3-4" should be very close for most people.
