Why are most review balls laid out 4" to 5.5"?
« on: October 09, 2009, 12:00:22 AM »
It seems that most times when I read a review the ball is laid out with a 4" to 5.5" pin to pap. Is this the only range to lay the ball out so that it isn't made condition specific? Is this the way it was 10 yrs ago or has evolving ball tech made it this way?

Just depends on the desired ball reaction, bowler, bowling ball, ect.

With how aggressive todays bowling equipment is, there isn't a lot of need for drilling bowling balls to roll too early. For many bowlers it can cause the ball to burn up and not do much of anything.

The 4-6" pin from pap drillings cover a ton of different drill patterns, from very common to not so common. You don't have as much of that when you start going with less then 4" from your pap.

Plus there are a lot of people, just from being in the proshop, they usually all say the same thing... I want the ball to go long and hook. Doesn't matter what the ball was designed for they want it to go long....and hook.

He's right, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that if you get further from 5 1/2" from your PAP you start to decrease the flare potential of the ball and not let it show it's true colors.  If you go the other way, you can either maximize the flare-potential (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) or if you go all the way to 1" or 2" you can decrease it again.

It's all about looking for a happy medium

I thought that theory was for symmetrical balls.  For asymmetrical the flare potential will continue to increase from 2 1/4" iirc from PAP on.

You may be the better bowler, but my car would blow the doors off of yours.

I remember at the Storm Ace seminar years ago the the rep (steve k.) said Storm was recomending distances of 4" or greater because the cores were too strong and at 3 3/8 would overflare
