Title: 2nd question
Post by: 5150BWLR on June 16, 2009, 02:41:57 PM: I recently acquired a NIB Bounty 2nd that has a CG marked about 1 1/2 inch right of the pin to MB line. My question is how do I know whether the CG is marked incorrectly or if the MB is marked incorrectly?

Post by: J_Mac on June 16, 2009, 10:55:26 PM: Checking the CG is easy if you take it to a shop that has a Kaufman scale. The lower the top weight, the less the distance off the pin/MB line matters.

Checking to be sure that the MB is marked correctly is a little tougher since DeTerminators are not as common in pro shops as a scale.

This location would be great if you were a left handed bowler and didn't want an extra hole.

Post by: slashrr69 on June 16, 2009, 10:56:59 PM: neither of them might be incorrect first of all.. it could be that the top weight is too high/low for what the company likes to call 1st quality, it could also be a color blem, slight pitting in the cover of the ball etc.etc.... you can though go to your local pro shop and have them put it on the machine that spins the ball to checks the mb(not actually sure what it is called).. also I think if you go to www.lane1bowling.com they have a section on their site that shows you how to check the cg..

Top weight is fine. 2 1/4oz. Pin to CG (if it's the correct one marked) is fine 2inches. Color is the same as my other bounty, which has everything (pin/Cg/MB)in line. Like I said, either the CG or the MB is marked incorrectly, since its 1 1/2 inches from either line I draw from Pin to MB or Pin To CG.

Post by: J_Mac on June 16, 2009, 11:44:22 PM: More than likely it's a 2nd because of the CG being out of line like that. If it had a longer pin out, it wouldn't be as big of a factor.

Post by: the pooh on June 17, 2009, 12:12:11 AM: It is still probably a first line ball. Most manufacturers don't consider it a second unless the cg is out of line by more than 2 1/2". Just because it is out of perfect alignment, does not mean anything is mis-marked. Even when out more than 2 1/2", some of those balls are the most desirable. Some companies will call those "pro cg" balls.

Post by: themagician on June 17, 2009, 01:49:08 AM: I wouldn't automatically assume its mismarked, check it with a scale and determinator if possible and then go from there. Most balls are a tiny bit off on CG marking, normally not far off it they are far off. The MB's are usually dead on due to them being marked by a pin but at times the pin can be bent or broke in the process or just not straight thus indicating the wrong location of the MB.

It is very well possible your ball is marked fine and is a first, if the ball doesn't have a ton of top weight you should be just fine to lay it out and use a small or maybe not even a weight hole, just weigh it before you drill it.

Looking at the drill sheet, the CG doesn't raelly matter on the bounty as much as the MB does so I'll drill it up using a pin/MB to PAP layout.
