Measurements.....Drilling Numbers Question
« on: March 18, 2016, 11:59:39 AM »
Looking for "how it's done"

You have a layout 4 X 4 X 2
Do you measure from the dead center of the pin or from the edge of the pin?

I always go from the dead center of the pin, but I saw that someone suggested a 2" VAL and they said 4 X 40 degrees so that meant that 40 degrees equals a 2" VAL

When I measured a 4 X 4 X 2 layout I came up with 34 degrees for the VAL, not 40 degrees. I did get 40 degrees when I measured from the edge of the pin.

Dead center of the pin or the closest edge?

I am using a Pro Sect by the way.

Thanks

Dead center of the pin was how I've always done it or understood it . . however you're going to see absolutely zero difference in ball reaction either measuring from the center of the pin or the edge, so I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you.

Wow

I guess I should have just asked the question if a 34 degree Val makes any difference compared to a 40 degree Val....but then again I might have gotten a double wow

It may not have a noticeable reaction impact, but it seemed like a legit question to me.  I've wondered the same thing before, along with where you measure from at the MB mark, since some are oddly shaped, like Storm's lightning bolt, which is pretty long.

Ok here's a legit answer
Every 1 1/16" is 15 degrees in movement
Flare is predicated on pin to pap distance, which most realize
If the pin is placed in a position of higher flare potential, then a mass bias position will have less factor in influencing flare, due to already maxing out
It also depends on the strength of the mass bias...under .010 is minimal or closer to symmetrical
I was always taught, many years ago, if you were within the size of a quarter of your desired position, you were fine...
Don't over think it...surface is 70-80% in effect of reaction
