Title: adding an x hole to an old ball to tweak its reaction.

I have a symmetrical pearl particle laid out with a 5" pin and 4" cg. I've been using this ball off and on for the last two years on different houses and I want to tweak its backend finish - to make it much stronger.

Before I talked with the PSO, I'm just curious to know more about this.

Curious of current surface finish on the ball? Is the ball currently going long with not much hook?

If you get a chance to play with the blueprint software it allows you to drill a ball and plot its reaction on the lane and then add a weight hole and over lay the 2 results. Then change the weight hole location or layout and repeat to see the different results. Same for surface adjustments.

Adding a flare increasing weight hole like a p3 didn't have this huge affect like I expected. Yes the diff and int diff went up a lot, but when plotted on the lane the starting and ending points were nearly identical.

The added weight hole had the ball flare more, which slowed down faster,  and hook earlier. Which can in many cases look like more backend.

Surface adjustments had some of the largest affects on ball reaction. Depending on your style, current surface of the ball, and where you're trying to play I may have a surface finish to try out and see what you think.

Where is the pin located?  Are you familiar with the motion hole?  The link below takes you to a page that has a video and a link to the written procedure, but if the pin is near a position described in the procedure a motion hole can be added even though the layout wasn't specifically designed for one.  --  JohnP

I've never used the blueprint, but I've heard about it. I'll look into that, maybe do the free trial. Does it really come pair to real world though? Yeah, surface is a bigger factor than x hole, but this ball is something to play with.

I've heard bout the motion hole, but my axis being 5"+ and the pin above the ring finger hole, it's not lossible. Or is it? From the videos I've seen, it makes the ball a different animal. Very interesting no doubt.

Similar specs and have used a motion hole.  Likely would need to drill fingers/thumb much deeper to account for the motion hole (will depend on current statics).  I've had best luck with using it on "simple" symmetrical core designs...  Lightbulb or the neutron cores...

Back end motion comes mainly from what you do to the ball with your hand.

If you have a comfortable release that generates too much back end motion, there are drillings, and surface changes to calm that down.

But if you do nothing to the ball at release, you're going to get nothing in terms of back end motion.

And no drilling will create it.

I had a pearlized Fantasy-X a friend gave to me. It did nothing but go straight when I got it. I use about 5 different releases however, so I could make it move going to my cranker release. Still...it only moved a couple of boards at best. I took the surface down to about 1000, and it moved a little more, but mostly in the midlane....not the backend.

Then I added a motion-hole, on the backside of the ball. I now have a condition specific ball that goes long but moves like a beast on the backend. That Mo-Hole works, you just have to be willing to try it out!
