Oval-angle of the thumb

I've started using oval inserts in 3 balls (please leave discussion of oval vs round for another time....)
I've noticed that there's at least a 15 degree difference in the oval angle on one ball compared to the other two. I do not notice the difference when throwing the ball, but it makes sense to me that it would have an impact. On a second, possibly related note, I've noticed that my skin is splitting on the inside right in the crease of the first knuckle, and that it gets worse when I'm using the one ball that's different. These two things may OR MAY NOT be related... I frankly do not know. Maybe I'm just gripping one more than the other. Thoughts on the impact of thumb angle or thoughts on what would cause the skin to split are appreciated...

Your thumb is oval, and the thumb insert is also oval and they are all not the same, then in one ball, the thumb will be tighter than in the other balls.  It may not make much of a difference in the short run, but over a long period of time, it could easily make your thumb dry and sore at different parts.

Left, primates have a gripping angle of 33 degrees.  A lot of problems with ovals is the thumb turning before exiting the ball.  Personally, I wouldn't recomend for anyone.

My oval is at about 45 degrees, and I'm very relieved that I'm not a primate ;)

I use a thumb mold that  I placed a small "notch" on the mold that I line up with the grip center line.  That way when I insert the mold all I do is have the notch and center line match up.

I also have my ovals turned at about a 45 degree angle.  I have been doing this for over 10 years and have no issues with release or tearing of the skin on the thumb.

The problem is not necessarily the oval pitch.  The problem is the ovals are not all in the same position.

814, we,re talking about gripping angle, not pitches.  You know the difference??   To continue,  "most" people rotate their thumb to some extent before the thumb clears.   If you rotate just a bit too much with  45 degree angle your thumb will drag.

  I am talking about the angle.  If one is inserted at 30 degrees and another at 40 degrees, they are not going to fit the same.

First months I started used circle, then switched to oval due to grabbing the ball with my thumb, best call ever, my thumb is WAY more relaxed and im guessing mine is around 40-45 angle, cant remember for sure and I have 2, one is tighter than the other for swelling issues

 Driller said mine is set at 52 degrees of rotation with 1/8 reverse and 1/4 left pitch in the hole.

Speaking of Ovals, do most PBA players have ovals drilled or mainly just round thumb holes..thanks

I agree with bullred on not recommending oval inserts (my drill won't handle drilled ovals, but I wouldn't recommend them either).  To get the same effect as an oval without the hanging problem I recommend drilling the thumb hole 1/32" oversized, then using one or two pieces of white tape in the front of the hole and a Magic Carpet in the back.  --  JohnP
