Layout question regarding 6" PAP
« on: January 29, 2005, 10:50:15 AM »
My PAP is 6" over, 1" up.  This would, in theory, limit the amount of layouts that I could feasibly use.  Layouts with small pin-to-PAP placements (between 0-2") would not be attainable without the use of a VERY large hole because of the amount of side weight in the ball, correct?  I'm sure top weight has something to do with this, but i'm not sure what though.  I know this is a blanket statement, but it seems as though I'd be limited with the PAP that I have, correct?  Or am I just imagining things?

Loose- My pap measurement is 6&1/4"over X 1&1/2 up. I use full roller layouts like 2" pin to center of grip. Pin & C.G. in a 7:30 alingment. This often does not require a weight hole. Sometimes it does but it is usually not too large. I did one ball recently where I put the pin 10&1/2" from grip center but in a 1:30 direction from grip center. This made it a 4&1/2" Pin to pap distance. It did require a large weighthole but the ball seemed to have more length than the typical full roller layouts. I'm drilling an identical ball in the typical full roller fashion(7:30 layout) to do a comparison.

If you want to get a 0-2" pin to pap, get balls with topweight under 3 ounces and pin lengths of 4 inches or more. You could feasibly have a ball with low topweight, 5 inch pin, put the pin 1 inch from your pap, and it might not even require a weighthole, although you would have a lot of sideweight. So yes, it is possible, and might not even require a weighthole.

On a side note, I just drilled up a ball with a 1 inch pin, 3.2 ounces of top, and put the pin 2 inches from my pap (5 1/4-5 1/2 over, 3/4 up depending on release, i used to 5 1/2 over for layout) and I got it to work by putting a very large and deep 1 1/4" weighthole 6 inches from grip center.

loose5682 -- That's why they make balls with varying pin to cg distances.  Get a ball with a 4" pin to cg, you can place the cg dead in the middle of the grip and the pin 2" from the PAP.  Of course, the cg, pin, and PAP will be in a straight line, and the pin will be out of the safe zone, but you get the idea.  For you, balls with a large pin to cg will be more versatile if you want to stay away from balance holes.  --  JohnP
