Just wanted to see what most of the ball drillers here think......when taking weight out of a ball, if the amount that needs to be removed is low, do you prefer to take the weight out of the finger holes, or do you prefer to just add a weight hole?

I like taking the weight out of the finger holes, UNLESS the desired reaction is to have the ball react more drastically at the breakpoint, which I see happen more when there is a weight hole in the ball.

I wonder, not being a driller, but always curious, wouldn't a driller prefer not to drill the finger and thumb holes too deeply for fear of altering the core and its dynamics?

While I have read that drilling a balance hole increase a ball's "reactivity", I have also read that putting that hole on the axis point of inside the axis point will soften the ball's "reactivity". Especially if the hole is wide and shallow, it will not remove core material or a lot of core material.

Since the lanes in my area tend to be drier and I throw a large hook as it is, I have tried not to drill weight holes in my balls in the last few years. If they were needed, I tend to put them on the axis point, because it is supposed to be less reactive.

I’m not sure if you are talking about reducing the gross weight of a ball or changing the balance of a  ball.

The amount removed by drilling is so low that trying to reduce the gross weight is almost an effort in futility. The most you could probably remove is 4 to 5 oz.

Assuming the ball has been balanced and laid out with the pin and CG position to get the reaction you are looking for then you can do small tweaks drilling the fingers deeper to reduce the amount of finger weight or the thumb deeper to gain finger weight. The amounts you can gain or loss is fairly small, probably less than ½ oz.

If you are needing to reduce or add side weight you are going to need a weight hole.  If you have to make a large adjustment in finger/thumb weight you will need a weight hole.  You can do both by placing the weight hole above or below the mid-line of the grip as needed.  

On drilling deep. Some balls have un-drillable cores that you will ruin a drill bit on if you hit them. So drilling deep is not  always an option. Also as you drill deeper the weight remove has less leverage toward the middle of the ball so the effect on the weights is less.
