finger lateral pitches?
« on: October 03, 2007, 08:27:01 PM »
are fingers supposed to be pitched apart enough so that they cant possibly run together no matter how deep they go, or no?

and if fingers are drilled extra deep to make a ball legal and they run together at the bottom a little bit is that a big deal?

yeah I thought 3/4 apart made the holes parallel to each other and it would be impossible for them to hit each other. my finger pitches are supposed to be 1/4 away on ring and 1/2 away on middle but on the ball I got drilled where the fingers are drilled about to the middle of the ball they ran together at the end for about a quarter inch to a half inch probably.

does that mean the pitches are wrong or is 3/4 really not quite parallel and just almost?

I don't think they should have come together if those pitches are correct.

at a 1/4" bridge 3/4 difference is good for about 2 1/8" before they will join. At 1" difference in laterals and still a 1/4" bridge I couldn't get the holes to meet. These are using a 31/32" drill bit. If you were to go with a smaller bit, you'd be able to have less difference in your lateral pitches.

If you have a habit of bridges "popping" then I would suggest increasing your lateral pitches or go with a wider bridge. The closer the bridge is at the bottom, the weaker this area becomes.

Normally if I need to go deep in the fingers, I'll drop a couple of sizes in the drill bit and then increase the lateral pitches to insure that they don't meet at the bottom.

so next time i need to drill fingers deep i can just add 1/8 more lateral to each finger and they shouldnt meet.

wonder if that would feel funny on my hand.

You can just drop a few drill sizes to extend the depth, you will be less likely to have the holes meet then, even with the same pitches.

Correct.

I personally drill the holes shallower and cut the inserts off. My fingers aren't very flexible and don't like the extra lateral pitches. When I had a shop, I used 10th frame inserts and never really had this problem. But now the inserts are much longer and you either have to drill deeper or cut the inserts off.

I think what StormTechDept meant was to drill the holes to their normal depth with the correct size bit, then change to a smaller bit and change the pitches, still drilling through the same hole.  I had never thought of that, it's a good idea.  --  JohnP
