Better Option for Playing Deep Inside Line
« on: December 16, 2011, 09:14:07 AM »
Wanting to play deeper inside and get the ball to recover, I've decided on one of three possibilities. Which of these options would be better suited:

50 x 4 3/8 x 70

or

45 x 5 1/2 x 60

or

65 x 4 3/8 x 65

Also, why do you think one of tehse would work best?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to reply.

To be able to honestly answer this question we would need a lot more info. What is your rev rate, speed, tilt, axis rotation? What ball are you planing on using? what pattern are you trying to use this with?

I trust replies will come after making some assumptions:

The lane conditions allow for the type of ball motion I'm after,

The type of ball will also be appropriate to play this part of the lane (let's just say it is a pearl that will store energy and not lose axis tilt prematurely),

and I can generate enough turn and speed to make the ball turn the corner.

In an ideal setting, with a bowler with some skills, if you set up three different balls one each with the layouts described above, which would you believe, in your experience, would probably be the most successful at turning the corner sufficiently to kick out corner pins, and why do you believe this to be true?

You're still not answering the questions....layouts aren't "condition and ball" specific....they are BOWLER specific.  We understand you want to play in, and the shot allows it, and you have a ball that will do it.  We need to know how you throw it to know what kind of shape downlane will most suit your game.

I dont have angles for this drill pattern but it works very well  my friends and I  need stuff to recover from everywhere or anywhere.

Layout is like this pin over bridge MB swung away from the thumb by about inch. We call this the magical layout it has worked for almost every bowler regardless of style/rev rate/ or ball speed,  looking to get the ball back from deep angles

Thanks Mainzer, That's approx. where I planned on drilling the new ball, except with the pin under the bridge, with MB swung out and a balance hole at P3 or P4 (also known as the "double thumb" layout).

Any other suggestions are welcome.

A pin under bridge layout may limit what you want to do. It controls the backend of the ball rather than enhance it. Also, the layout you're describing is not a double thumb. Double thumb is 60*x4"x40* with a P4 hole that has a 1" gap between the thumb and x-hole which allows you to raise the diff of the ball by continuing to drill the x-hole with a bigger bit. You would also need a specific ball pin placement (preferably 4") and a specific top weight.

Getting to the "meat" of your question, of the 3, I'd go with the 65* layout, however IMO, I'd modify your layout to get ball more downlane and shrink the second angle so as the ball is not so sideways. If your playing deeper in, im assuming that the lanes have dried a bit and your chasing the oil so I would think you wouldnt need such a large 2nd angle as the ball will be doing a lot the work for you. Again, just my opinion

Keep the Pin up sir,

If you put the pin down the ball will tend to roll early and thus may not recover from as deep as it would with the pin up.

Putting the pin up in this layout will get the ball down lane farther, thus into the drier parts of the lane before it starts using energy to hook allowing it to recover from deeper lines

First, thank you so much for offering your thoughts.

I thought the large second angle would be necessary to get the ball to continue to corner. You are correct in that I wish to chase the oil. The problem I have presently is none of my equipment will continue to corner through the carrydown. Am I correct to want to keep the ball "sideways" throughout the lane?

That depends on your PAP, track, rev rate, speed, etc. What ball are you looking to drill and what do you normally throw when your trying to get in?

It's just funny that with all of the literature on the web, that there is still so much ignorance about this game.

So you're going to tell me that drilling a ball to play inside for Wayne Garber and Michael Haugen would have the same angles and pin placements as Sean Rash and Tommy Jones?  The ball doesn't matter....just the layout....revrate, tilt, speed...irrelevant...just core placement?

Let's use some common sense here....

A P4 weight hole is not the same as a double thumb layout.  If you want to layout a ball to play deep inside angles and properly use the dual angle layout system, you must know your ball speed, rev rate, PAP, tilt, and axis rotation.  Once you have accurately determined each one of these, you can determine what your dual angle "sweet spot" is, and what type of ratios of drilling angle to VAL angle will suit what you are trying to accomplish.

Russell this maybe a problem with todays game and I understand your opinion, but you and your dick head attitude is also one of the main problems of the game today.
