What kind of reaction would I get with this...
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:57:48 AM »
I am a high track player with a small span (approx 4 1/4) so I normally drill everything pin above the ring or beside the ring because I am afraid of rolling over the thumb hole. I recently picked up a 2nd with a very short pin (1 inch) so I obviously can't put the pin above the ring finger on this one. I was thinking of putting it directly below (about 1/2 inch or so) my ring finger. This would put the cg stacked directly under that about an inch.

What type of reaction should I expect with that type of drilling? I have seen it used on TV with some pros, but just wondered how the normal joe bowler like myself would do with a drilling like that.

Any comments would be appreciated..

The danger with high trackeers isn't rolling over the thumb hole it's flaring into the finger holes because of a lowered bowtie.  If your PAP location is less than about 5" over or has a vertical component of 3/4+" up (so the initial track angles away from the finger holes) the chance of hitting the finger holes isn't very high.  The pin to PAP distance is the predominant factor, having the pin lower will just make the ball go into its roll a little earlier.  I have a Red Zone drilled with the pin under the MF and it doesn't hit any holes.  My PAP is 5 15/16" X 3/16" up.  --  JohnP

If your PAP is less than five inches you are not a high tracker/roller but more of a medium roller.

My fiancee has a layout like you speak of an a storm fast with a shorter pin as well.  She is somewhat of a spinner at times, doesn't creat alot of revs and has a lower speed.

I would call the look she gets with that layout as early hook set.

I can't comment on your PAP being that high and what result you would get though.  Just do be in the safe zone though, I prefer to stick with drillings that I know will work for.

Generally draw a line from your PAP to your middle finger hole and stay above that and you'll be good.  I don't know why people need so much early roll in their layouts anyway.  My PAP is almost 6", I get plenty of roll.

With your PAP location I don't think a pin under drilling is going to give you a problem, but you won't know for sure until you try it.  --  JohnP

Try putting the pin IN your ring finger. I have two of these (one asy and one sym) and both roll really well. CG is wherever you like it..

5 1/2 over and 1/4 dn is my pap..
