Drill press specs for home proshop

Hi guys.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me the specs needed for a drill press for a home proshop.  I have a chance to buy a barely used Porter Cable floor stand drill press with a 5/8" chuck and 4" quill distance.  Its says it can change speeds from 300 to 3,000 rpms.  I've drilled on an AMF Vacujig and Delta bench top drill press so I'm pretty sure this press will work..plus I can get it for $200. Then I'm thinking of getting an Innovative SJ-2000 jig and bits...so I think I can be up and drilling for under $2,000.00.  Let me know.

I have a Jet Drill Press I bought from JayHawk about 10 years ago I'll sell for $300 if you live near Nashville, TN!! I have photos of the press if your interested!! I haven't used it for about 4 years after I bought my Powerhouse Mill in 2008. Thanks, Bruce

Is that a KMT ball jig your using?

As A matter of fact,it is a KMT ball Jig. I had a 1" by 6" inch piece cut
out from the front of it so it would match the width of the mill table.
My mill table with ball jig cost me about $450.00.
The least expensive jig I could find was $600.00.Every thing works great.
I zero the table with the ball plug cutter I have.

I just picked up this setup for $400 locally.  It's a Brunswick setup, model 61-100000 and it came with all of the drill bits, bevel sander, and a Bill Taylor Ball-Fitter (which I have for sale in the FS forums), and some other items.  Bought it from a Sports Authority that was getting out of the drilling business.  The manager of the store even said that they got the press somewhat recently to replace their old one.

I had been toying around with the idea of drilling for a while and even picked up a Jayhawk Jig off of craigslist.  Came across the whole setup while searching for a press that would work with the jig I had, so now the Jayhawk jig is for sale in the forums as well ($250) since I don't need it...

I've never drilled before, so now I need to get educated!

Thats pretty awesome! Now you just have to double check to make sure its drilling the pitches it's indicating. Great find.

And it is.  I picked up some Jonell Pitch gauges and it's drilling pitches exactly as indicated.  I just need to figure out how to tighten up the jig or lock it as it tends to wobble.

The clamps? Or the actually press its self. If its the clamps you might be able to upgrade to the locking plate. If its the press, 1/2 hardware locks down just about anything. Lol! Still pretty sweet my friend.

Thanks, so far I like it.  I've drilled two balls now.

The clamps are fine, there's just a lot of play in the jig table it's self.  The top plate wobbles while the bottom plate is secured to the press.

I know this is an old topic, but I have to ask you guys this.  I notice there are x and y axis on the drill press itself.  Then I noticed the mill table that EFFEN 10 talked about has those "crank wheels" as the best term I can think of.  What exactly do you turn to change the pitches on the ball?  Do you turn the ones on the press or the ones on the mill table?

The mill table is attached to the press.  He uses the KMT jig (which is attached to the table) to hold the ball, moving the table to adjust the pitches.

That is correct. I adjust pitches using the crank handles on the MILL table.

OK now my next question is, how deep from the table of the drill press to the bottom of the hole where you put the drill bit in do you need?  Obviously a 8" isn't going to do it.  How about 12"?

I was looking at this one: http://www.ballreviews.com/drilling-layouts/drill-press-specs-for-home-proshop-t287557.15.html and throw that mill table on that was recommended in this post and then the KMT jig.
